Australia wins again at U-19s, but Ellis has off day
Australia remained perfect at the U-19 basketball championships in New Zealand, beating Kazakhstan 87-54, but SLU recruit Cody Ellis had an off day, making just 1 of 9 shots, including 1 of 8 on 2-point tries. He also had two assists, two rebounds and two steals in 17 minutes. SLU’s other Aussie recruit, Christian Salecich, made two of three 3-point tries for six points in 19 minutes and had two assists. Here’s the boxscore. For some games, I’ve seen a posted shot chart, but I can’t find one for this game either.
I haven’t seen any highlights from the game online.
After a big 25-point game in the opener against Canada, Ellis has come down to earth a bit.
Australia plays Argentina later today and then faces Croatia to close out the second round of competition. Australia, Croatia and the United States are the only teams still undefeated in the tournament. If I fully understood the point system they use in the standings, I’d say Australia has clinched a spot in the quarterfinals. But I can’t find an explanation anywhere on FIBA’s website to say why some teams get a point in the standings for a loss. I thought it might be if you outscored a team in a half or a quarter, but there seem to be teams that have gotten points when outscored in all four halves.

Tom, they all get 2 points for a win and 1 point for a loss. The points from the opening-round of pool play carry over into the next round of pool play, which will determine which teams advance to the medal levels of elimination play.
Also, in case you never figured it out, the time difference is 17 hours, including the daylight-savings hour. At 7 p.m. Tuesday here it’s noon Wednesday there.
