Conklin update: They’re not sure yet
I’ll have more on the St. Ambrose exhibition later — it may be one of the least convincing 14 point wins ever — but first, an update on SLU forward Brian Conklin, who was last seen hobbling out one of the tunnels at Chaifetz after hurting his right ankle.
The answer is, they’re not sure. The ankle swelled up and they put it on ice. They took him to the hospital for X-rays to be safe. He will be treated and evaluated over the weekend and they don’t expect to know his status for the week ahead until Sunday or Monday. All Majerus said he knew about the injury was, “It’s not a compound fracture.” Obviously, if it was any kind of a fracture, they’d know that by now, so the wait and see approach seems to indicate if there is a serious injury, it’s not obvious.
Obviously, losing Conklin for any amount of time would be trouble, because right now, the options to replace him are limited. Majerus said after the game that Jeff Reid, who looked great in his 12 minutes, might still need surgery on a bunion on his foot that has limited his practice time, and if he had that surgery, he could be out for the season. Right now, I don’t know that you can get many more minutes out of Reid. Cory Remekun and Jon Smith did not have good showings against St. Ambrose.
