SLU men’s socer picks up big win over Temple; women’s team eliminated
Jacob Brown scored his first goal of the season, heading in a pass from Alex Sweetin in the fifth minute, as SLU beat Temple 1-0 on Friday. The win pushes SLU into second ahead of Fordham in the Atlantic 10 and three points behind Dayton, which has clinched first. It also means SLU will get an all-important first-round bye if it can beat St. Joseph’s, the only team in the nation yet to win a game, on Sunday.
Some impromptu back-of-the-envelope calculations (actually done on the back of a Baylor football press release) say that if SLU finishes second, it would likely get the winner of a Charlotte-Rhode Island first-round match, with first-place Dayton getting either Fordham or St. Bonaventure. SLU played Charlotte pretty close when they met in the regular season, so a win there isn’t out of the question. But the final standings aren’t set yet. And SLU does have to beat St. Joe’s. A loss or a tie there could mean a fourth-place finish. SLU’s win today did assure it a playoff spot.
Though who plays who isn’t set, the six teams in the A-10 tournament will be Dayton, SLU, Fordham, Charlotte, Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure. Fordham and Charlotte are tied at 17 points and if they finish tied, Charlotte has the tiebreaker edge. Rhode Island and Bonaventure are tied for fifth; Bonaventure has the edge on that tiebreaker.

SLU’s women’s team’s season ended on Friday night with a 5-1 loss to Dayton at the A-10 women’s tournament. SLU fell behind 3-0 in the first half, got a goal, and then didn’t score again.

Elsewhere, SLU’s women’s volleyball team beat Charlotte in straight sets. SLU is going to finish either first or second in the league, there isn’t really much of a difference, but its main obstacle to winning the conference tournament is that it’s being played in Dayton. The only loss in league play for SLU this year was to Dayton at Dayton, though they blew I think four match points in that one. (It might have been five.)
