Lineup 3.8: Thunder row

JUPITER, Fla. — Wouldn’t surprise anyone if the Cardinals’ offense this season is built upon a foundation of home runs, even if manager Tony La Russa doesn’t want his guys talking home run, thinking home run and, most of all, swinging for home run.

Thing is, they’re going to need the home run. No, really need it.

The Cardinals will have at least two sluggers with 40-homer seasons in their careers in the middle of the order; Juan Gonzalez, though slipping from his early-spring play, represents a third option. Expand the definition a bit and Rick Ankiel hit more than  40 combined at two levels last season.

The first six spots in today’s lineup, which will face the LA Dodgers at Roger Dean Stadium, is a example of how the Cardinals (5-5) could pack the power in their order:

  1. Colby Rasmus, LF … Led all Double-A players with 29 homers last season.
  2. Joe Mather, 1B … Breakout year included 31 homers in 2007.
  3. Rick Ankiel, CF … Hit 43 homers at Triple-A and the majors in ‘07.
  4. Troy Glaus, 3B … Once led the AL in homers with 47 in 2000.
  5. Juan Gonzalez, DH … Two-time MVP has five 40-plus homer seasons.
  6. Ryan Ludwick, RF … Is only a few years removed from 28 HR in Triple-A.
  7. Yadier Molina, C
  8. Adam Kennedy, 2B
  9. Cesar Izturis, SS

And that is without Albert Pujols (day off) and Chris Duncan (stiff back; more below), but they would up the pop by substracting one of the hitters above. Consider their subs just power proxy.

Starting pitcher: RHP Braden Looper. Also scheduled to pitch: LHP Ron Villone; LHP Ron Flores; RHP Blake Hawksworth; RHP Russ Springer; RHP Kelvin Jimenez; RHP Mark Worrell.

***

Outfielder Duncan had his back “stiffen” on him yesterday and he’s been a scratch the last couple days, La Russa said. Duncan told trainers that he feels better today, and he’ll return to swinging a bat Sunday. If cleared from there he’s scheduled to join the team in Orlando for Monday’s game against the Braves.

Golly, we have to do something with short and second… maybe we can trade a young outfielder for something productive at one of those positions, without sacrificing defense. Our infield middle defense last year was unacceptable…. but Mendoza line offense in these positions is equally unacceptable. I think at this point, you have to keep Barton on the team, and not let him go back to Cleveland. We need a speed option badly. Mather looks real interesting. Rasmus has to go down… just for contract reasons… until June.
Is Ponson viable ? I don’t see anyone else bringing as much to the plate as Ponson, if he is in shape as they say and throwing up to 93, with a good bite on the breaking ball, instead of the rolling balloon he threw a couple of years ago for a curve. I like Thompson and Wellemeyer enough… but neither one is more than a 4-5 inning starter.

Cut all ties with Adam Kennedy. Trade for Brian Roberts. That solves the 2B issues. Could be wishful thinking on my part.

Brendan Ryan needs to be the everyday SS. Look at the Cardinals record with him in the line-up last year. He plays hard and makes things happen.

I think this line-up has some pop. If our pitching is stable this ballclub is better than people think. It could be a fun season to watch.

DG,

I have to believe that if both Izturis and Kennedy continue to play as they have, that Ryan will take one of their spots. Miles is willing to be a backup player, and the others aren’t. In the outfield, you know that you’re going to have Ankiel, Duncan, and Ludwick. Shumacker is winning a spot, and Gonzalez is falling off. So, you are looking for one backup infielder and one backup outfielder. Is Josh Phelps being pushed out by Mather? Wouldn’t that leave room for them to keep Barton in the outfield? I’d be interested in what you think.

Thanks.

As bad as Kennedy has been, I kind of expect Ryan to make this team somehow.

Also,

I think Ludwick is overrated and I’d get whatever I could for him right now. Unfortunately, you can’t trade Duncan right now because we rehired his daddy. Duncan has injury and strikeout machine written all over him, as well as being a defensive liability.

What happened to the reports Juan would start in the field today and tomorrow? Is he ever going to play the field? Is there something to be read into that? (i hope so)

Can we pass a hat around and take up a collection to have them pay Izturis to go away?

Will never see it, b/c its a TLR led team…but Ryan as the starting SS…..Mather as the 1B/3B/OF utility guy and Barton the 5th OF’er

Means no Izturis and no Juan Gone….TLR wouldnt stand for that.

DG is saying Mather is not a real defensive option off the bench at third as much as he is a needed righthanded bat to platoon againts LHP and patrol the outfield…..
