JUPITER, Fla. — The question was posed in the comment section of the previous Vuch Report, and the answer to just who Carlos Pupo is begins with a simple rule.

Location. Location. Location.

The strapping first baseman lives near Jupiter and he worked out often with the Gulf Coast League team last summer. So much that he made an impression on coach Dan Radison and the Cardinals signed him for this season. Pupo has pop — “raw power,” wrote a Cardinals’ official. As described over at Future Redbirds, Pupo didn’t have a distinguished career at other stops. But he has the bat that gets attention, has the vote of Radison and now has a chance.

And, now, the (original) Vuch Report:

** Memphis 5, New Orleans 4 **

Joe Rogers, the lefthanded who throws a few knuckleballs a game, threw three scoreless innings and allowed two hits. He walked none and struck out two. … Blake Hawksworth pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out four.

Dennis Dove took the loss after working 1/3 inning and allowing three hits, three runs and one walk in the ninth to the Mets’ affiliate.

– Offensively, center fielder Reid Gorecki, once the Cardinals’ minor league player of the year (over just-traded Daric Barton, it should be noted) went 2-for-5 with an RBI. … Before coming over to the major-league game for an at-bat, Gabe Johnson doubled and had 2 RBIs.

** Springfield 2, Binghamton 2 **

Fernando Salas pitched three innings and allwed two runs, both earned. … Brandon Dickson pitched three scoreless innings (2 hits, 2 BB, and a K), Kyle Sadlowski two scoreless innings with a strikeout and St. Louis native Bob Zimmerman pitched a scoreless 9th.

Dan Nelson homered for one of the Springfield runs. Pride of Tulane Mark Hamilton doubled, walked twice and drove in the other Springfield run.

** Palm Beach 4, St. Lucie 1 **

Tommy Pham continued his strong spring start with a 2-for-3 game, walking once and scoring twice. Steve Hill went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. … Brian Broderick pitched three scoreless innings and allowed three hits. Logan Collier got the win with two scoreless innings and Armando Carrasco added two scoreless.

** Quad Cities #1 5, Savannah 3 **

Francisco Samuel picked up the save with a flawless ninth inning. He busted the bat of the leadoff hitter, got a meek grounder back to the mound and then finished the victory with a strikeout.

Wayne Daman pitched three scoreless (two hits, one walk, one K).

– Offensively, switch-hitting speedster Beau Riportella, a 2007 draft pick identified as one of the players bringing speed back to the Cardinals’ minors, had a couple hits and an RBI. Justin Roberson went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, and Andrew Brown tripled, walked, scored twice and drove in a run.

** Quad Cities #2 11, Gildea’s Raiders 3 **

Chuckie Fick, who got some notoriety during last year’s draft when he was picked in the middle rounds, pitched a couple innings, allowed two hits and two runs and struck out four. … Jose Mateo, not to be confused with the Rule 5 pick from a few springs ago, pitched three scoreless and hitless innings, striking out four and claiming the victory.

– BYU alum Collin Fanning, who started slow last season (.159 in 21 pro games) and missed time with a fractured leg, was 2-for-3 with two triples, a walk and four RBIs, and Pride of McNeese Charles Kingrey was 3-for-4.

I haven’t heard Dennis Dove’s name in ages. He made such a strong impression last spring that I have wondered where he is. With so little mention this year I have thought he might have been traded to another organization. Has he been hurt?
