Cards sign Lynn, 30 others (updated)

TOWER GROVE — With the first full day of draft-pick workouts going on at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla., the Cardinals announced that they have agreed to a deal with their second pick from last week’s draft, righty Lance Lynn, and 30 other players.

Six of the team’s top 10 selections have signed.

First-round pick Brett Wallace, taken 13th overall, became eligible to negotiate with the Cardinals after the Arizona State baseball team was eliminated from postseason play Monday night. (Though, as many of you know, Wallace went out in unusual style, staging a fight with a teammate … a plot that had been used before at ASU to calm? inspire? crackup? teammates before the elimination game.) Both the Cardinals and Wallace have said they expect to come to an agreement, which could include a signing bonus in the $1.8-million range.

Other notables not yet under contract include Nevada prep infielder Niko Vasquez (91st), a power prospect middle infielder who had several members of the Cardinals draft room talking the next day about how excited that they got him, and UC-Irvine righthander Scott Gorgen, who dazzled in Day 1 of the Super Regional at good ol’ Alex Box Stadium before his Anteaters were bounced by the Bayou Bengals.

Thirty of the Cardinals’ 51 picks have signed.

The other 29 draft picks announced as signed and ready to join the Cardinals’ extended spring training work in Florida are (numbers are round drafted), with comments sprinkled in to the list:

1a. Lance Lynn RHP; 2. Shane Peterson OF; 5. Jermaine Curtis; 6. Eric Fornataro RHP; 7. Anthony Ferrara LHP …

Ferrara is an intriguing seventh-round selection, and clearly one of the lefthanded ptichers the Cardinals thought they could score in the second-wave rounds. Ferrara had biceps tendinitis his senior year, going 4-4, 2.74 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 46 innings this past season. According to some reports, he was ranked as high as the eighth-best prep pitching prospect in the country after his junior year. He was named to the team for the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic, the same team that launched Tim Melville’s profile. On draft Thursday, the local paper described the play-by-play

Major-league teams dangled the draft carrot in front of the left-hander all day. A Brewers scout was text messaging his mother beginning in the second round. The Phillies called in the third, wanting the family to fax over Ferrara’s medical records. The White Sox and Tigers also kept calling, asking if Ferrara, a USF signee, would still turn pro if he slipped into the lower paying slotted rounds. At the end of the day, he still wasn’t picked.

And onward to the signings:

 10. Alejandro Castellanos 2B; 11. Devin Shepherd OF; 14. Charles Cutler C; 16. Miguel Flores RHP; 17. Joshua Hester RHP; 20. Luis Mateo SS; 21. Matt Rigoli 1B; 23. Jonny Bravo LHP

Johnny Bravo. Hoo. Ha!The last name there caught many eyes in the Cardinals’ major-league clubhouse on Friday and prompted conversations about the swellness of The Brady Brunch to the entertaining options of The Cartoon Network (can’t beat Venture Bros). While it does look in the picture here that Mr. (Not-so) Macho has a wicked cool lefty delivery there, this is not the Bravo that the Cardinals drafted. The Jonny Bravo the Cardinals picked up has a big name and small frame, and there’s more about him at his university’s official Web site.

Some more:

24. Zachary Pitts RHP; 25. Jason Buursma RHP; 26. Christopher Swauger OF; 27. George Brown LHP; 28. Matthew Frevert RHP; 29. Brett Lilley 2B; 32. Samuel Freeman LHP; 33. Kevin Thomas RHP; 34. Jack Cawley C; 36. Chris Notti RHP; 38. Daniel Richardson RHP; 39. Curt Smith 1B; 40. Paul Cruz OF; 42. Blake Murphy C; 43. Joe Babick OF; 44. Santo Maertz RHP; 49. Adam Veres RHP.

Second time is the charm with Sam Freeman, who the Cardinals selected last year in the 24th round and finally signed this year after taking him in the 32nd round. The Jayhawk lefty went 4-1 with an 8.53 ERA in 13 appearances this past season. He won three of his first four starts. … The Cardinals continue to mine the Cape Cod League for picks, as Christopher Swauger and Matt Frevert have both been members of the Harwich Mariners in the Cape. … Curt Smith was the America East Player of the Year. In 2008, he hit a league-best .403 and slugged .722 with 11 homer, 60 runs, 12 steals (on 14 attempts) and 37 RBIs. Smith career records at the University of Maine: 19 triples, ranks second with 300 hits, third in doubles (60), third in RBIs with 178, and he scored 199 runs. … The Riverfront Times’ Aaron Schafer put up his rundown on the Cardinals’ draft this morning.

BoganyThe Cardinals also announced that they have signed undrafted free agent Jarred Bogany, an outfielder out of Lubbock Christian. But you’ve heard his name before somewhere. Bogany has been around a bit, playing for both Arizona State and LSU before heading to Lubbock Christian. Perfect Game has some writeups on him, and his player page over at Lubbock Christian mentions that he had been drafted before — in the 15th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He hit .322/.383/.615 this past season with 52 runs, eight home runs and 44 RBIs. Bogany came to the Cardinals workout in Houston and impressed the gathered officials and scouts with his batting practice.

I’ll echo what the previous poster said: Good to see quick signings and get them in uniform. I’ll also be watching Niko Vasquez– who will probably be the toughest sign because of his College options and because he could provide some needed middle infield help for the baby birds.

DG,
How have other sites rated the Cardinals draft? How do you feel about the draft picks and the signings thus far?

Correction police (which I get, all the time) It’s Aaron Schafer, just like the P from Wichita State that was drafted by the Cubs. He also goes by the moniker theredbaron as one of the writers at viva el birdos.

Now that we got that straight, it’s time do “do the monkey with me!”, as Johnny Bravo would always say.

I know better. Just a matter of TyWOT — TYping WithOut Thinking. (Actually I was typing while cracking up at some of the other entries in Schafer’s blog over there.) Curse of every keyboard jock. Happens. And it shouldn’t. Apologies. Apologies galore.

And the beauty of the blog is … it’s already fixed.

29th round pick Brett Lilley of Notre Dame set an NCAA record this year by being hit by a pitch 109 times during his 231 game career. He has that task down to a science.

Had a .479 on base percentage and .336 average for his career.

who else is going to be a hard sign besides Niko?

With little Dunc being called up that seems a sure sign that Albert is headed to the DL. Surprisngly though with the heart the 2008 Cards have shown and played with they will be able to stick around for the next month while El Hombre and Wainer recover. Is Lil’ Dunc really worth it? He might hit a few homeruns here or there but those are cancled out by all the defense mishaps he suffers. His swing has not gotten any better at Memphis and is he going to be in the lineup in three or four hole every night. I hope not and I’d like to see Joey Bombs play equally as much time as Dunc at 1B.

Seems like it is about time to take Barton off the roster and return him back to Cleveland. He gets a pinch hit AB here or there and sometimes a start, but for the most part he is blocking both playing time for Lud and Mighty Joe and Ras is starting to heat up in Memphis he could be ready late this summer.I still think Barton could be a very good player if he was given the chance to play everyday, but there is just to much outfield talent in the Cardinal organization.

Clement seems to be throwing well in his few rehab assingments. I really don’t count on him to save the rotation though. This guy hasn’t pitched in over a year. Is he really going to come in and save the rotation. BTW, heal quickly Albert!!!

This is pretty way out there, but is there a chance that if the Cardinals fall off the map without Albert (Which I don’t think they will)that Albert will opt for surgery on his elbow? It makes sense to have it done now and rehab it over the last few months of the summer and then be ready to go in 2009. I just can’t help ,but think how much better El Hombre could be (as if he wasn’t already good enough)if that elbow were repaired…..

So, how come some of the others haven’t signed yet? What about OF Swinson? Picked in the 12th round and choosing JUCO instead? Are the Cardinals being notoriously cheap or is he being unreasonable?

Niko figures to be tough to sign. That seems the most likely to drag on. … Don’t read too much into there not being daily news on these signings. The Cardinals tend to do them in clumps — or at least announce them in clumps. Figure there will be an additional wave of signings this weekend. … I’m interested to see if they trot Wallace into Busch Stadium at some point during this home stand to take BP, meet the media, see the place, take some ceremonially ground balls at third, pick a faux fight with a teammate — I kid. C’mon. Some levity.
