TOWER GROVE — With the first full day of draft-pick workouts going on at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla., the Cardinals announced that they have agreed to a deal with their second pick from last week’s draft, righty Lance Lynn, and 30 other players.

Six of the team’s top 10 selections have signed.

First-round pick Brett Wallace, taken 13th overall, became eligible to negotiate with the Cardinals after the Arizona State baseball team was eliminated from postseason play Monday night. (Though, as many of you know, Wallace went out in unusual style, staging a fight with a teammate … a plot that had been used before at ASU to calm? inspire? crackup? teammates before the elimination game.) Both the Cardinals and Wallace have said they expect to come to an agreement, which could include a signing bonus in the $1.8-million range.

Other notables not yet under contract include Nevada prep infielder Niko Vasquez (91st), a power prospect middle infielder who had several members of the Cardinals draft room talking the next day about how excited that they got him, and UC-Irvine righthander Scott Gorgen, who dazzled in Day 1 of the Super Regional at good ol’ Alex Box Stadium before his Anteaters were bounced by the Bayou Bengals.   

Thirty of the Cardinals’ 51 picks have signed.

The other 29 draft picks announced as signed and ready to join the Cardinals’ extended spring training work in Florida are (numbers are round drafted), with comments sprinkled in to the list:

Ferrara is an intriguing seventh-round selection, and clearly one of the lefthanded ptichers the Cardinals thought they could score in the second-wave rounds. Ferrara had biceps tendinitis his senior year, going 4-4, 2.74 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 46 innings this past season. According to some reports, he was ranked as high as the eighth-best prep pitching prospect in the country after his junior year. He was named to the team for the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic, the same team that launched Tim Melville’s profile. On draft Thursday, the local paper described the play-by-play: 

Major-league teams dangled the draft carrot in front of the left-hander all day. A Brewers scout was text messaging his mother beginning in the second round. The Phillies called in the third, wanting the family to fax over Ferrara’s medical records. The White Sox and Tigers also kept calling, asking if Ferrara, a USF signee, would still turn pro if he slipped into the lower paying slotted rounds. At the end of the day, he still wasn’t picked.

The last name there caught many eyes in the Cardinals’ major-league clubhouse on Friday and prompted conversations about the swellness of The Brady Brunch to the entertaining options of The Cartoon Network (can’t beat Venture Bros). While it does look in the picture here that Mr. (Not-so) Macho has a wicked cool lefty delivery there, this is not the Bravo that the Cardinals drafted. The Jonny Bravo the Cardinals picked up has a big name and small frame, and there’s more about him at his university’s official Web site.

Second time is the charm with Sam Freeman, who the Cardinals selected last year in the 24th round and finally signed this year after taking him in the 32nd round. The Jayhawk lefty went 4-1 with an 8.53 ERA in 13 appearances this past season. He won three of his first four starts. … The Cardinals continue to mine the Cape Cod League for picks, as Christopher Swauger and Matt Frevert have both been members of the Harwich Mariners in the Cape. … Curt Smith was the America East Player of the Year. In 2008, he hit a league-best .403 and slugged .722 with 11 homer, 60 runs, 12 steals (on 14 attempts) and 37 RBIs. Smith career records at the University of Maine: 19 triples, ranks second with 300 hits, third in doubles (60), third in RBIs with 178, and he scored 199 runs. … The Riverfront Times’ Aaron Schafer put up his rundown on the Cardinals’ draft this morning.

The Cardinals also announced that they have signed undrafted free agent Jarred Bogany, an outfielder out of Lubbock Christian. But you’ve heard his name before somewhere. Bogany has been around a bit, playing for both Arizona State and LSU before heading to Lubbock Christian. Perfect Game has some writeups on him, and his player page over at Lubbock Christian mentions that he had been drafted before — in the 15th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He hit .322/.383/.615 this past season with 52 runs, eight home runs and 44 RBIs. Bogany came to the Cardinals workout in Houston and impressed the gathered officials and scouts with his batting practice.
