Going Commercial: Tune in for Bearded ‘Birds, Straw Hats and Albert Pujols’ Cape
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Had they given him more warning, St. Louis Cardinals’ closer candidate Jason Motte probably could have got his Sutter on and grown out a beard both the Cardinals Hall of Fame closer and ZZ Top would have been proud. Motte has featured this spring almost as many looks with his beard as he has experiences — casual beard, Grizzly Adams, King Tut tuft, etc.
And for a commercial with the Cardinals he and Chris Perez sported the Bruce Sutter — though fake.
Motte and others use of props was mentioned in this blog earlier this spring as a film crew descended on spring training to make the latest installments of the “Play Like a Cardinal” campaign. They filmed Ryan Ludwick and others in straw hats. They caught Kyle McClellan eating fried chicken. And they featured Albert Pujols taking BP as they boarded up the windows of the offices at Roger Dean Stadium. The filming of the spots was covered (complete) with photos back a few blogs:
Now you can see the spots for yourself. The Cardinals posted them recently on their official website, at the following link: Cardinals 2009 Commercials. The one on the far right in the second row explains involves Brendan Ryan, Adam Wainwright and the cape in Pujols’ locker.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Didn’t see the LaRussa and Fredbird one.
These are all fantastic. Especially the McClellan and Fredbird one. Great stuff from K-Mac and Fredbird.
Good stuff! I love the brief conversation between Lohse and Wellemeyer at the beginning of the Fredbird icing his arm one:
“So we’re pretty much BFF now, huh?”
“Pretty much.”
Awesome.
Outstanding. I live in Texas and may never have gotten to see these ads, except here. Thank you so much. They are tremendous.
Outstanding. Best line: “That means it’s working.”
Man, am I ready for Opening Day.
The straw hats and the superman cape were the best….but I have to agree the best line was “That means it’s working”…way to go Franklin
Thank you for the commercials! So funny. Any way you could post or send me last seasons? I miss the one with Aaron Miles and Fredbird and the sunflower seeds.
