The PD-Q: Todd Wellemeyer
JUPITER, Fla. — When working my way through the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse with The P-DQ this spring training, many of his teammates have suggested that, “Oh, you’ve got to try this Todd.” Todd being the clubhouse Colonel, the bluegrass conservative and starting pitcher Todd Wellemeyer.
On Wednesday morning, I pulled up a stool — Josh Kinney’s stool, to be precise — next to Wellemeyer’s locker and asked him the handful of questions that make up The P-DQ. With most who have done it, starting with CC Sabathia and continuing since, it takes about 4 minutes, and usually no more than 6. Wellemeyer pondered each answer and needed more than 12 minutes to run through the list. That gave his teammates plenty of time to gather around and offer suggestions or snarky remarks.
Sure, enough Wellemeyer delivered on his teammates’ promises. Pull up a stool and wrap your mind around his answers to The P-DQ. And check the ending, where something happened so perfectly timed that Adam Wainwright said it was a sign and Wellemeyer asked what time it was so that he could remember the moment this metaphorical lightning struck.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Between Wainwright’s “Tombstone” movie choice and Wellemeyer’s “Jean-Luc Picard) Super hero choice, I am now more excited about this upcoming season.
Moments like that cannot be choreographed. Great visual, DG!
Bull Durham is the best!!!! Atta boy Todd W!!!!!!!!
hahaha great ending. I hope Wellemeyer just sticks to pitching for the time being and not trying to get to the moon anytime soon.

This guy is what baseball is all about. Todd W. is the kind of guy that separates baseball players from football players and basketball players. Thoughtful, interesting and perhaps has a few loose screws in places other than his seat.
This guy is my favorite pitcher on the staff even with out the blog… WHAT A FUNNY DUDE
Scoff not at perfect attendance from kindergarten through 8th grade. That’s an achievement beyond that of many presidents, congressmen, Supreme Court justices and I am certain, aristocracy the world over.
I’m proud of you, Colonel Wellemeyer, and salute the dedicated elementary school scholar you once were.
Derrick,
None of this caught me off guard about Wellemeyer, but impressed all the same. He’s simply in a long line of intriguing personalities in baseball.
As for his on the field work, he impressed me greatly last year. It won’t shock me if he wins at least 15 games in 2009. Keep up the fight, Todd!
I totally have “I can’t wait” by Nu Shooz on my ipod.. don’t be embarassed Todd! That song is the jam son.
Yah, if this dude can keep from giving me an ulcer every 1st and 2nd inning, he could easily be one of my favorite players. Anybody who’s that wierd but still comfortable in his skin is alright with me.
