Vuch Report: Getting Defensive

JUPITER, Fla. — One of the tricky things about reading box scores from spring training back there in the northern tundra is the inability to see the defensive side of the game. It’s impossible to know how Skip Schumaker is adjusting to second base this late in the camp or how he and Khalil Greene are clicking as a double-play combo without the benefit of something beyond the box score.

Ditto with the minors — only that reality extends into the season.

We can all scan the box scores for how Brett Wallace is hitting at any given time this summer, but how will we know how he played at third that day. How about how Daryl jones did in center field? Or, if Niko Vasquez is doing enough defensively to, you know, stay at shortstop for awhile. Today’s Vuch Report goes beyond the box score by offering some anecdotal evidence of the defensive play Wednesday with the St. Louis Cardinals minor-league affiliates. Yunior Castillo had a “big league” play at shortstop. St. Louis native Travis Mitchell snared a sinking liner. There are just snapshots of defense, but they had some flavor beyond the batting numbers, and it reminds us that as great as they are not everything can be found in the box scores. That is especially true in spring, and in the minors.

On with the Vuch Report:

Shane Peterson with a pair of hits in the AAA game? What’s the scuttlebutt on where the organization plans to place him to begin the year, DG?

Nice pitching lines for Fiske, Lynn, and supersleeper Adam Veres–any reports on how hard those guys (or Ottavino, for that matter) were throwing?

Thanks for these reports, Derrick!

DG, thoughts on the plan with Kozma? I for one, wasn’t expecting him to make the jump all the way to Springfield to begin the year. What’s the plan for the start of ‘09 with Pete?

What is the word on Tyler Norrick, an SIU LH pitcher, is he making a jump from A to AAA?
