BL Blogcast: Brendan Ryan’s Collecting Signs from the Stars
DOWNTOWN — The locker next to St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Ryan’s in the clubhouse is starting to look like a sports memorabilia shop — or a dry cleaner. There are jerseys from all corners of the major leagues hanging there, waiting for Ryan to find out a way to get them signed.
For someone who has signed a few autographs, he’s still working out how to ask for them.
The etiquette of the act is what he worries about. In New York, he had a David Wright No. 5 Mets jersey ready to be signed and he winced a bit when he discovered Wright signed the jersey after one of the games. He already has one signed by Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, and the plan is to get all of the jerseys hanging in his locker signed this season. But it’s better to let him explain it. Let’s go to the tape.
The Post-Dispatch has armed me with a video doohickey thingamagig to test drive for awhile here and see how it operates in the wild of covering major-league baseball. Yesterday, was my first attempt at reviving that wannabe film-school student and channeling my inner-cinematographer. No Scorsese am I. I went 1-for-2 in my attempts to pull together a video interview. Ryan’s guided tour of his growing jersey collection — in its larval stage — was the one that worked.
Roll out the red carpet, here’s the premiere (after a brief commercial):
Be kind. But if this works we’ll have to come up with a new name for the feature. P-D TV? Bird Land Broadcasts? The B-Land Network? Heck, if it’s well-received can JSL!!@#%!! Live On Tape be far behind.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Keep pushing limits DG and soon you to will be a media magnet like Bernie!
Good job as always!
Thanks for the note. Gotta know … is that a pun?
1) does this mean we are going to have to look at d*mn commercials all the time ?
2 uh, the cam isn’t being held very steadily.
Very cool, keep doing them, and posting some more PD-Qs. Can you get them to work on the iphone? Maybe posting on YouTube or something?
Great stuff, Derrick!
Stop thinking of names; here’s your winner: Bird Land Birdcast.
Tripod.
Tripod, dear Tripod, a Tripod is being worked on, Tripod.
Always adding new content to an already outstanding sports section - THANKS!
As for the name, IMO it should be obvious:
the Birds-Eye View.
Congrats DG, this is really good stuff. Between 10 @ 10 and this, I almost get relief from my interday Jones for all things Cardinals. I am sure Mr. Ryan is looking at this and reminding himself to speak towards the microphone. See you soon at the grocery store - in the de-caffinated coffee section one would hope.
How about Skip on one of these? He always does a nice job in interviews.
Or Franklin. Maybe he can show us his grips on all those pitches he throws.
You can get players all year, how about some of the people preparing for the All Star game.
