ASG Blogcast: Torre on honoring Stan Musial
DOWNTOWN — Whenever Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre has had a reason to return to St. Louis — which was oh so rarely when he skippered the New York Yankees — he makes a point to visit Stan Musial, the St. Louis Cardinals great and St. Louis icon. He also keeps every message he gets from Musial.
Every one.
Torre, meeting with the media Monday during the All-Star workout day interviews in downtown St. Louis, said whenever Musial calls him and leaves a voice mail, Torre saves those voice mails. Asked about what tonight’s event could be like to honor Musial, Torre, who managed the Cardinals in the 1990s, said Musial’s presence at the game at Busch Stadium is enough.
“I don’t need to see him honored,” Torre said. “I just need to see him.”
In another of the series of blogcasts from the 80th All-Star Game, Torre — in part 1 here — talks about the American League’s dominance in the game, Toronto’s trade-block ace Roy Halladay as a race-changer and, of course, his fondness for The Man, Musial.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Stan will always be the man! I grew up seeing him at church every Sunday. He has given all for the game and community- to include the communities in Poland where he would go to build ballfields for kids. The sad truth is that most fans outside of STL can rattle of a long list of juiced cheaters few know that it means to be The Man!
Torre makes it clear, Halladay is a premium pitcher. It’s simple, get Halladay and the Cards get a pennant & are favorites to get to the World Series. The future is now, spend the money, Mo! And it will make a statement to Albert, Imagine having Carpenter, Wainwright, Halladay in the rotation…
StanFan, you’re truly lucky seeing Stan at church. That’s awesome. He’s the best, and Torre’s comments say it all, he doesn’t need to see him honored, he just needs to see him. I’m really looking forward to tonight to see how Musial is honored. My heart was in my throat last night just listening to the comments about the Cardinals and our history. Tonight will be special, can’t wait.
Kind of a cool article on Ichiro and George Sisler.

OH how i wish we still had joe torre as the cardinals manager.I wonder how many championships me would have if torre would have stayed?Tony may be the 2nd or 3rd best option but dont compare him to torre please.
I couldn’t agree more with Joe Torre’s admiration for “Stan the Man” Musial. More than 30 years ago, Stan was walking up the steps of Cardinal Glennon Hospital to tape a fund-raising commercial. My two year old son, Matt, and I met Stan on the hospital steps. Stan walked over to Matt and said, Hello young man, would you like to be on TV with me? Matt responded immediately, saying, No, I don’t want to be one of those little people (inside the TV.) So, Stan said, how about if I buy you a hot dog? Matt said, OK. Years later my Godchild, Tyler Sinks, had the pleasure to do a commercial with Stan and he was equally thoughtful to Tyler. I’d give anything to get a copy of the taped commercials with “The Man.” He was equally generous with his time to support Democrats for public office. He’ll always be one of my heros.
“Stan The Man” Musial was - and is - A Baseball Legend and Hero. To see Mr. Torre pay Mr. Musial the respect he earned long ago last night before the game was touching. Stan Musial is absolutely one of my all-time favorites, and I just wish Pete Rose showed half the humility when addressing the fans, Etc., that Stan The Man has shown over the years.
It’s a shame that the NL blew the All-Star Game, but judging by the Mets’ Third Baseman “yuking it up” in the 9th Inning, while Jeter and the AL certainly had every right to smile on their side, makes an old NL Fan like me SICK. Albert Pujols is the Greatest in the game today, and made some good plays at 1B, but it would have been nice to see a big basehit or home run.
Sorry, but I’m tired of the NL’s LOSING this thing every game. I still look back to Ted Williams grand slam in 1941 (I think) and Pete Rose’s crashing into Ray Fosse to score the winning run in his Hometown, Cincinnati, in 1970. Where Pujols disappointed in St Louis, Rose did not.
Let’s get Roy Halliday and win another World Series in St Louis. If you don’t get Roy, at least get Dan Haren back for us.
I was sorry to read that Stan the Man supports the Democrats. It just goes to show that even the great ones can have one major flaw.
Let’s get Roy or Dan Haren & beef up for another World Series banner in St Louis.
