BL Blogcast: Kyle Lohse on his rehab start (and a 10@10 note)
TOWER GROVE — The next hurdle between St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse and his return to the rotation in time for Sunday’s doubleheader at Wrigley Field comes tonight in Memphis.
The righthander, who is recovering from a strained forearm, will make his second rehab start, this time for the Class AAA Memphis Redbirds. Last week, Lohse threw 79 pitches in a 4 2/3 innings rehab appearance with the Class AA affiliate in Springfield, Mo. Lohse needed 25 pitches to get through his first inning of his first rehab start, and he explained later that the feel for his pitches just wasn’t there immediately after a long layoff.
Command and the crispness of his pitches will be two tell-tale signs for tonight’s start.
As will be his comfort.
Lohse’s next start in the majors, which is tentatively scheduled as part of the doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, will be the 262nd appearance of his nine-year career. He made the first 261 of them without going on the disabled list. During chat in Great American Ball Park’s visitors’ dugout this past weekend, Lohse talks about taking pride in going eight seasons without a DL trip, how he thinks he did it, why he still counts this season as a DL-less season and how a fluke in a season littered with flukes led to this injury. The new toy caught it all on — well, not film — how about … pixels:
PROGRAMMING NOTE: The road beckons as I must leave now for Memphis to cover Lohse’s rehab start and check in on a few other stories percolating with the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate. Time usually spent on the 10@10 will be taken up by driving and All-Star assignments. The daily feature will return Wednesday morning from Memphis. Check back here later today, however, for notes and anecdotes and then news from Memphis concerning the team there and Lohse’s rehab start.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Derrick, I’ve been a Cardinal Fan since i was 9 tears old (now 84). I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens N.Y. and often went to Ebbets Field to seem them play the Dodgers. All my friends were rapid Dodger fans. My queston is long ago I use to be A Little League manager and the rules were you had to play all the kids in a game. I watch the Tony and I was wondering was he ever a Little League manager.
Don’t be suprised if Lohse breezes through 6 in 90 pitches. He’s got a mustache folks, Carpenter and Wainright are coming off brilliant starts fueled by leveraging the power of the mustache.
Dave Duncan + Mustaches = 3rd best starters ERA in the NL (and MLB)
What’s up with this 2nd baseman that the cards have in Double A? He was on the Sporting news all minor league team at midpoint way…havent’ heard of him before
Daniel Descalso was their everyday 2B, pretty great first half of the season, who was promoted to AAA (I believe when Hoffpauir was brought up to the big league club). He’s performed decently in his 3 games there: 13AB, 4H, 1 2B, 1 SO, 2 R with a .308 AVG. Obviously, with only 5 bases in 13 AB his SLG isn’t what it was in Springfield (.531 vs. .385) so his OPS has suffered (.928 vs. .692), but it’s a small sample size @ Memphis. I asked about DD a week ago (was even labeled “geek” for it). We’ll see what he does over the rest of the year and next year, as I can’t imagine he’d leap frog into the #1 2B prospect spot by the end of this season.
Delcalso, eh? I hope DG comes back with a scouting report, and also one on whether Wallace is making progress with his fielding.
Any update on Derosa? Will he be back next year?
I meant “tonight” not “next year” although I hope we can resign him.
Is it just me or does the mustache make Lohse look like Napolean Dynamite’s buddy?
Vote For Pedro!!
My first time in 50 years to see the Cards at Wrigley is Sat. How do the starters line up for this week. Will Carp be probable starter for Sat.?
