BL Blogcast: Yadier Molina on his All-Star election
CINCINNATI — It wasn’t difficult for anyone who spent time around the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse to know how important winning a Gold Glove was to catcher Yadier Molina. Friends and pundits alike felt that he had deserved two before and had lost them because his bat wasn’t the equal to his peers’.
Older brother Bengie Molina said this past weekend the Gold Glove wasn’t the only thing Molina set as a goal.
Molina wanted to be an All-Star — especially this year, when the game came to him.
“He’s a kid that has feelings inside,” Molina said as he walked to the San Francisco Giants’ bus after Sunday’s game. “He might not show it outside, but he has great feelings inside. He let me know (how important the All-Star pick is to him). We talk. This means the world to him. I think he’s going to have a blast.”
In his comments about being elected as the National League starter at catcher for the coming All-Star Game, which will be played July 14 at Busch Stadium, Molina references how much the invite means to him, to his family and “to his people.” He wanted it as a tribute to his father, who died this past offseason, and his older brother said that they see it as a berth for the family. Yadier is the first of the three major-league Molina brothers to play in the All-Star Game.
Here are his thoughts on the All-Star Game from the clubhouse Sunday:

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
I am most concerned about Albert being in the Home Run Derby. During Saturday’s game, I saw him rubbing his right elbow at least four times. I hope he doesn’t hurt it during the all-star festivities.
Congratulations to the Yadier on his being selected to the All-Star team. I’m sure it means a lot, especially being voted in by the fans. I’m glad that he’s finally getting widespread recognition for what Cardinals fans have known for a few years, that he is the best catcher in the National League.
I couldn’t be happier for Molina on his selection the game.As a huge fan that’s watched him become the best catcher in the league, this is a just reward. Go get em, Yadier. All of Birdland is proud of you.
I totally noticed the same thing with Albert and his elbow the other day during the game. Not a good sign! Plus he hasn’t made it a secret this year that it’s bothering him again. Eeck! I would love to see him in the Home Run Derby, but not at any chance that he might blow his elbow out trying to please the crowd.
i think hes going to do really good in the all star game. it’s such a privalige because neither him or any of his brothers have been in the all star game so this is very big for him. i wish him the best of luck
