Buehrle on being a Cardinal, Mauer on the Triple Crown
DOWNTOWN — In his final start before racing home for the All-Star Game, St. Charles native Mark Buehrle allowed eight runs (all earned) on 10 hits in a dismal 3 1/3 innings for the Chicago White Sox. He heard all the jokes. American League manager Joe Maddon called and told him to stay home. His teammates asked him if he was going to use his bad game as his bid to compete in the Home Run Derby — as the pitcher.
Yuk. Yuk.
In this video from the All-Star Game interviews, Buehrle discusses first the number of tickets he’s been able to score for the family (nearly four times more than Eureka, Ill.-native Ben Zobrist did) and he de discusses last his dud start on the eve of the All-Star Game. In between, he also says the words you’ve heard before about wanting to be a St. Louis Cardinal sometime in his career — for one day, for one pitch.

Minnesota’s Joe Mauer has won two batting titles and is well on his way to a third this season, so he has a good view of what it takes to win a Triple Crown. But beyond that he was quick to describe what else he learned about Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols during his first visit to St. Louis and his first real chance a few weeks ago to chat with the reigning NL MVP.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Mr. Strauss,
Didn’t the Twins visit Busch about a month ago? I thought Mauer was on that trip, but now I’m not so sure?
Yours in celebrating Zobrist,

‘One last question: why aren’t there left-handed catchers?’
That guy got a media pass…sweet
JPinSTL,
Check the byline first (Mr. Strauss? Seriously? The lack of self-promotion didn’t give it away?)and then check the description. It does not say his first visit to St. Louis was for the All-Star Game. In fact, in his answer he says when they came here a few weeks ago … that was his first chance to see St. Louis and to see Albert Pujols in his element.
Thanks,
dg
