Kyle Lohse set to go as far as he can in Memphis
MEMPHIS — In a clubhouse loaded with rookies that have shuttled between St. Louis and its Class AAA affiliate this season, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse arrived in the Redbirds clubhouse to see a familiar face climb with him up the minor-league ladder.
Second baseman Daniel Descalso, a Double-A All-Star, will play his fourth game for Triple-A Memphis tonight, fresh from a promotion that brought him here hours after he helped Lohse get through his last rehab start, in Class AA Springfield. Descalso, a Texas League All-Star, made a lunging catch in foul territory during Lohse’s start (”I don’t really know how I came up with it,” Descalso said this afternoon) and hit a home run, his eighth, in the S-Cards’ July 2nd game.
That night he was promoted. Tonight he’s batting third for the Redbirds.
Lohse, who is making what the Cardinals hope is his final rehab start before rejoining the rotation Sunday, is targeted for between 90 and 100 pitches tonight. The Redbirds will let him go as long as his pitch count holds, even if it’s deep into the game against Round Rock. Lohse said the overall sharpness of his pitches and the command of his fastball will be the keys for him tonight.
Here are the lineups for tonight’s game, including another familiar face — a two-time Cardinals’ organization player of the year. Yes, it’s John Gall Bobblehead Night at AutoZone Park, and Gall is here … batting cleanup for the opposition.

How about this as a 2010 St. Louis Cardinals lineup?
1. Skip Schumaker, LF
2. Colby Rasmus, CF
3. Albert Pujols, 1B
4. Ryan Ludwick, RF
5. Brett Wallace, 3B
6. Mark DeRosa, 2B
7. Yadier Molina, C
8. Adam Wainwright, P
9. Brendan Ryan, SS
I like any outfield that excludes Rick Ankiel. Why are we still talking about this guy?
THAT LINEUP IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!! I AM ALL IN FAVOR. ALTHOUGH, I LOVE ANKIEL HE JUST DOESN’T SEEM TO BE THE SAME PRODUCTIVE TYPE HITTER WE THOUGHT WE WAS GOING TO BE.
HIS STORY AND PERSERVERVANCE IS STILL AMAZING NO MATTER WHAT TRANSPIRES THIS YEAR.
I’m optimistic about Lohse getting back to the rotation on
That was weird–I didn’t even click on submit button but my comment was posted though I was not done with it. So, trying again…
I’m optimistic about Lohse getting back to the rotation Sunday, but less so about DeRosa’s chances for immediately after the ASG. Wasn’t Wainwright’s injury last year a torn tendon sheath? Different tendon, I know, but same basic problem. The length of his recovery will depend on the severity of the tear. As with Wainwright, it could take a couple of months for it to heal if it’s a smaller tear or it could take the rest of the season if it’s a more serious tear. It was described as a small tear, so let’s hope we’ll have him back in about 6 weeks or so. Then at least we’d have him for the stretch run.
I went down to Memphis for the weekend and saw the Redbirds play Sunday. In my very uneducated opinion Wallace looked downright slow at third. On one play a dribbler down the 3rd base line, he wasn’t even close to making the play, on another ball to his left, he barely moved. I can’t imagine he can play 3rd in the bigs. I’m not sure why he isn’t getting some ojt in left. Descalso hit the ball hard in the game I saw also. He’s young 21 or 22 I think. What does Tyler Greene going down do to Donavon Solano? He’s been hitting the ball well in Memphis. Will he go back to Springfield to continue to get playing time? He definately looks like a prospect and him and Greene need to play everyday. How about Wallace as player to go after Roy Halliday with? I heard the Jay’s were shopping him and he’s under contract for next year. We could live with a little less hitting with a top 3 of Halliday, Carp, and Wainright. Just dreaming
