The P-DQ: Ryan Braun
TOWER GROVE — When the Milwaukee Brewers last visited Busch Stadium, way back in May, outfielder Ryan Braun made a diving catch in left field that left him sprawled on the warning track. He fought the urge to do a snow angel in the track, but couldn’t repress his personality when he got to the dugout.
Manager Ken Macha told reporters afterward that Braun trotted down the steps and told his teammates that it just may be the best catch ever. He said it didn’t sound like Braun was joking.
Such is the irrepressible confidence — and enthusiasm — of the 2007 Rookie of the Year who has continued to develop as one of the finest righthanded hitters in the National League. The Brewers visit Busch for the first time since May for a three-game series that starts Tuesday, and Braun returns to St. Louis this week for the first time since the All-Star Game. He is a two-time All-Star, and he arrives nearing his third consecutive season of 30 homers and his second consecutive 100-RBI summer. Even beyond his flamboyance on the field, Braun is a fascinating personality, right down to the office he has in Trump Tower for a clothing line he launched.
“LAX to JFK,” he said, describing his offseason. “Back and forth.”
As the Brewers-Cardinals rivalry has smoldered the past few seasons, Braun has become a leading player in the animosity. Sometimes it’s as silly as the untucking-jersey kerfuffle or as pivotal as a home run that he stands to watch soar out of the ballpark. Either way, Braun may be out of allies in the Cardinals’ clubhouse. Chris Perez, the Cardinals’ former reliever, was a teammate of Braun’s at Miami and he would sometimes defend his fellow Hurricane. Braun knows there are some that don’t care for him.
He figures that’s because they don’t know him.
“It’s all good,” he said. “Everybody is entitled to their opinion. I understand why people have the perception. It’s kind of how I carry myself. I’m competing. When I’m on the field, I’m competing.”
When he was off the field earlier this season, he took some time, while tucking in his jersey before batting practice, to answer The P-DQ:

“I actually got all of my songs from Mike Cameron”
….isn’t that illegal? Copying music
It isn’t often I see the personal side of someone and it doesn’t help me to like them any more. I don’t like Braun any more.
Thanks for feeding our baseball Jones on the off day Derrick.
He rented office space in Trump Tower for his line of d-bag tees? Seems like a colossal waste of money for a fad that will hopefully be ending any day now.
This guy does not have confidence at all. That is why tries so hard to convince people that he does. Let’s see, loves Denzel movies? used to drive a Honda Accord? Hmmmm, so did my little sister. The guy is a joke, only cares about himself, not a team player. He and Fielder have such an undeserved sense of accomplishment. You’ve been to the post season once, just once since 1982, and your stay was short. Get over yourselves.
Love, love, love P-DQ. But not Ryan Braun.
Was curious about his clothing line and found a 2008 article from “OnMilwaukee.com” about it, which included this chuckle-inducing tidbit: “Encouraged by friends who own Affliction Clothing, a California-based clothing manufacturer that also promotes mixed martial arts fights,…”
Ahh, MMA and edgy, overpriced t-shirts…pure Marketing genius…
I have to ditto joepa’s sentiments. I was hoping to come away from that w/a reason to like the guy. Didn’t happen…
really don’t understand all the Ryan Braun hatred running rampant here, he’s just another player with a house on the beach in Malibu and a Mercedes Benz. What’s he supposed to say, he loves the Cardinals and their fans.
DG, let’s do a P-DQ on “this guy’s a bag” next time because I want to know how his first car and his like of Denzel movies means he’s not a team player. Or how those also equal no confidence? Just because your sister has self-esteem issues due to her car and favorite movies doesn’t mean everybody does. Perhaps “this guy” has problems formulating an argument, but I would love to hear more from him and his conclusions since we could all use more entertainment on a Monday.
Ryan The HeBrewer. Even if his mom wasn’t Jewish, what a perfect team for him! Greenberg, Green and Braun, the Jews will take what they can get.
