Build Your Own Cardinals Postseason Roster

TOWER GROVE — As St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has been describing it recently, he and manager Tony La Russa have been in “constant contact” over the past week or so about the playoff roster. Mozeliak has said that La Russa carries an informal final say with the roster because it is La Russa who will pull the levers and push the buttons and deploy the pinch runners available to him on said roster.

In this morning’s paper, colleague Rick “Commish” Hummel, gives a rundown of the likely makeup of the Cardinals’ playoff roster. Khalil Greene has been told he can go home, and the Cardinals appear committed to 12 pitchers on the first-round roster. Troy Glaus will be active for the National League Division Series; David Freese can only be active if an injury happens. And so. Still there are some questions left to be decided — Mitchell Boggs, Todd Wellemeyer, Brad Thompson, Blake Hawksworth, et. al. … the Cardinals are leaning, but where are you?

The players eligible for the postseason roster are the 25 players on the active roster as of Aug. 31 and any players on the major-league disabled list. The Cardinals have 28 total.

Last week, we experimented with a poll that, when completed, would offer an illustration of the reader-approved 2010 lineup. Same theory here. Below are the 28 names eligible for the NLDS (Freese is not included for reasons explained today). You can click 25 of them. And if you think Greene should be on the roster, then don’t let the news dissuade you. Click away. A hint: Count the three blanks, not the 25 checks.

Call it an interactive postseason roster.

Would honestly rather see Glaus disabled and Freese on the roster. Glaus does have the 02 experience in his favor though.

There must be a Dodger fan voting or something.

Why does La Russa give Wellemeyer so much love? If he comes in during a crucial moment of a playoff game…. AHHHHHHH!!!

Glaus over Thurston, Thompson over Wellemeyer for the last 2 spots

I’m calling it right now. Jason LaRue, walk-off HR, 12th inning, Game 5, NLCS.

I voted for him, but Hawksworth at 98% is a bit surprising.

I didn’t vote for him, but Wellemeyer’s calm and collected handling of Freese at catcher yesterday shows something. He has maintained his perspective all while he has struggled to right his mechanics. I hope he gets a solid look next year.

I think Wellemeyer should remain on the roster. He’s experienced. He can go deep if someone gets hurt or pitch mid relief. Duncan needs to beat it into his head that he needs to keep the ball down and if he is pitching short innings as opposed to starting that he should pump up the speed. He can throw at 97mph. Boggs has also proven he can do this. I like Khalil better than Glaus. Khalil has had succesful pinch hitting this year including home runs. Glaus has a bad back and doesn’t seem to be able to pull the ball. His swing is opening to the right.
I would love to leave Reyes off the roster but know we need two lefties. Unfortunately with Smoltz, and Lohse there for long relief as well as Boggs and McClellan, and being required to keep Reyes I’ve had to leave out Thompson and Hawksworth. This really sucks and is difficult as I like both of these guys. I do feel we need the extra bat.

FO must not place Welle or Thompson on the roster in order to eliminate LaRussa’s temptation to use them. I must not understand — is Freese ineligible for the post season roster? He should absolutely be on the roster over Glaus.

Troy Glaus? Fans (92% of the voters) mesemerized by the myth of the long ball. Sad. Dream on. While Thruston is not my favorite utility choice (David Freese my choice, too bad but rules are rules), JoeThur will go west.
Brad Thompson, not Glaus, should be on the list. Brad had some very decent days with Carpenter out and can help. And Wellemeyer has had it rough, but he’s been there working. There’s a matter of chemistry to consider here. Those that got the team to where they are, deserve to ride along. With Glaus in tow, the Cards are 14-16 (I think that’s accurate).
See you in LA.
