PostCards Live! Edmonds goes Ivy?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

GRAND CENTER — Both Chicago papers are reporting that Jim Edmonds could be a Cub shortly after he flies off waivers this week, having been released over the weekend by San Diego. A signature Cardinal — one of several members of the 2004 pennant-winning team to have a tough weekend (Julian Tavarez, for example) — is said to be attractive to the Cubs as an option other than youngster Felix Pie in Wrigley Field’s center field.

The Chicago Sun-Times Gordon Wittenmyer reports this evening that:

… multiple Cubs sources said the team plans to pursue Edmonds, and one said Edmonds has told his agent to talk to no one before he talks to the Cubs. The Cubs have considered a left-handed bat a need for weeks.

On The Chicago Tribune baseball blog, Hardball, Cubs beater writer Paul Sullivan (and noted Mizzou alum), posited the possible move to readers and was hit immediately by this comment: “Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal.” Sullivan outlined a few reasons, like Edmonds’ 17 homers at Wrigley (including the one that left Carlos Zambrano yelling at him as he rounded the bases), and:

Looking strictly at the numbers, it doesn’t appear to be worth the risk. Edmonds hit .178 with a .265 on-base percentage for the Padres, and seems to be past his prime, turning 38 next month. On the other hand, he does have a .298 career average against right-handers, and they’d only have to pay Edmonds the major league minimum.

Some thoughts from the Green Room here:

Max Leinwand: “Jimmy Ballgame, playing for the Cubbies? … That’s like the Montagues playing for the Capulets’ softball team.”

Jim Hayes: “If Edmonds thinks he can still play and if somewhere deep down he feels he’s was wronged by the Cards, it seems like the move for them. … I texted him to find out what he’s going to do, and I’ve gotten no response. So I’m waiting. Jimmy if you read this blog, text me.

“Talking with Skip Schumaker and Anthony Reyes, who worked out with him in the offseason, said he looked like he was in great shape. They said, that he was determined to show he can still play. Supposedly that’s why he went to San Diego because he wanted to be a starting center fielder. So obviously he did think he was going to play.

“I did talk to a bunch of Cardinals in Milwaukee and they all feel he’ll show up somewhere, on somebody’s roster. That report (the Cubs) had not surfaced at that point.”

Aside: One of the reasons the Cardinals and Edmonds decided to part company this offseason was because Edmonds wanted to start and the Cardinals could not guarantee that the rise of Colby Rasmus or arrival of Rick Ankiel would not mean the shift to part-time status for Edmonds. Late last season, one Cardinals official said that as he looked at 2008 he saw Ankiel as the starting center fielder, even if Edmonds was still on the team.

Pat Parris: “As long as he doesn’t mind his restaurant and club closing because there is no way Cardinals fans will patronize a Cub-players’ establishment. … I do not think he has it in him. If the Cubs are trying to get some veteran guy in there to spell Pie, I think that’s a mistake. Pie just has to fight through the mistakes of being a young outfielder. Why would you take the at-bats away from Pie?”

Hayes: “All I know, is if it were to happen it would spice-up the next series. It would make for good theater. Now let’s talk about Team 1380.”

I think the cubs have better luck with Felix than jimmy. Jim has like 1 more season in him while Felix many left in him

For the last two-plus seasons, Edmonds has shown increasingly that he’s a strikeout machine, is injury-prone and suspect on defense. I think he’ll be patrolling a small patch of center field in Wrigley for the next 4-5 years! That’s Cub baseball as Cardinal fans have come to know and love it for generations. Seriously, this would be a classically bad move for the Cubs. Even better, he gets hot for a week or two when he first arrives, and then they’ll stick with him all summer! Imagine signing a guy who just got cut by the worst team in baseball.

The image of Jim Edmonds roaming center field of Wrigley is like trying to picture a beer vendor at Busch Stadium yelling “Old Style!” Jimmy will go down as one of the Cardinal greats, but something just feels wrong — almost sacrilegious — about the idea of him playing for the archrival. I do hope Edmonds finds a starting job again… but ANYWHERE besides the North Side!

Could Edmonds and Zambrano share the same dugout? Hasn’t he always had difficulty patrolling CF at Wrigley? That said, if they only pay him league-minimum I don’t see how that would be a bad move for the profligate Cubs Organization if they need a LH bat.

Edmonds to the North Side could be just the thing for MLB to force the [four-letter word] out of Weeghman Park. With the way Edmonds plays defense and the lack of padding on the brick outfield walls, I can easily envision a career-ending, perhaps even life-threatening, injury.

I can think of no other team I’d rather see Edmonds pull down. Do it, Chicago.

I really hope that Jimmy Ballgame doesn’t make such a foolish decision. It will be very difficult to cheer and support him if he does become a small bear, especially when they are playing against the Cardinals! I hope that he finds a place to play, and does well…but please, please don’t play for the rotten Cubs!

I cannot imagine ever owning a Cubs shirt with “Edmonds” on the back. I am a Cubs fan, and trust me, I am just as unhappy as Edmonds fans about the talk of this move. But if this how Jimmy wants to get back at the Cardinals, then so be it. Lets watch how fast a dedicated fan base turns on him. And mark my words, if he doesnt produce the Cubs will not be afraid to cut their losses with this one. We have other options……..

Sheesh I hope the Cubs don’t bother with Edmonds. The last thing they need is a washed up old timer who can’t even make the cut in San Diego. Who’s next on the scouting report? Matt Morris?

The Cubs will win the World Series with Edmonds.

Oh my God! I just heard this news. I’m afraid becuase if the Cubs get Edmonds they will automatically win a World Series this year by the All Star break. I really hope the Cubs don’t do this. The Cubs will become invincible please don’t do this Cubs. I hope the Cubs don’t do this they will be soo good, and so smart. Oh my the Cardinals and Padres will be so sad if the CUBS do this. Oh please someone else sign Jimmy whiff-ball or the CUBS will wing the World Series by the end of May. THose Cubs are so smart I don’t see how anyone can match how smart they are picking up Edmonds and instantaneously win a World Series. I never get a straight answer from Larussa or Mazowliak or DeWitt when I ask them about Jimmy ouchy. I hope Major League baseball can recover from the CUBS placing this final piece in their new 14 consecutive World Series victories with Jimmy anchoring centerfield. I hope the Cardinals can beat the CUBS to get him. Whoever gets Edmonds will automatically win the 2007 World Series. Unbelieveable

What’s next? Brett Favre to the Bears?

If the Edmonds I saw on ESPN this weekend when he was let go is the real one, it doesn’t matter if it’s the Cubs, Padres, whoever…the highlights I saw were a player who just didn’t have it anymore, the bat, the defense, from what they showed Jimmy can’t run down a thing anymore (and it hurts to say it ‘cuz I AM a big Jimmy fan). But the clips they showed were embarrassing. Jimmy should call it a career and book tickets to Cooperstown for 2013.

I’d love to see it!

Jimmy still has something in the tank. And this is not about payback. It’s about proving he can still play. There is a difference. It’s called maturity.

Let’s face it - he was not hitting the ball in PETCO but then again they have a team average of .233 which is the lowest in baseball. He had no cover. And he has never come flying out of the gate.

I love baseball and seeing someone who has made the game a great experience get another opportunity to show some flashes of brillance once again in center field would be a thrill.

Go get ‘em, Jimmy!

Favre to Bears. Nice reference. Varitek to Yankees. Jordan to Pistons. Backe to Cardinals. Nixon to China.

Did Edmonds play for Boston in 2007? Just curious, I thought someone said that whoever Jimmy played for will win the 2007 World Series.

I highly doubt that the Cubs would let Jim Edmonds take them down. Having him occassionally start at center and one or two at bats every third game would not be as influential as that of, say, a reliever?

It amazes me and entertains me that a lot of former Jimmy fans will now become disgruntled about him. Poor guy, you let him go for a minor leaguer and now dont like him because he is trying to find a team to play for. To a Cubs fan, it could be flattery that we spend so much time and energy hating them.

I was excited about Edmonds returning to Bush ,so us Bird fans could give him a big ovation….Now that it appears he’s headed to the Cubs I’ll have a tough time EVER rooting for Jimmy.
Again, though, I fear Felix Pie more than Edmonds who is no where near where he once was. Hey,Dg,what do you thing of Jimmy Ballgames chance at the hall of fame?

The Edmonds-Hall of Fame question is a fascinating one. I like the “Best At” rule. Did, at some point in his career, he rank at the Best At his position, the Best At the plate, the Best At playing center field … Was he considered the premiere player on his team, in his league, in the game at something. In Edmonds case, the answer defines his Hall of Fame chances.

Sort of.

Edmonds was the best center fielder ever for the Cardinals, and for a long stretch — starting with his stretching dive to the warning track as an Angel in Kansas City — Edmonds was the Best At playing center field. He added the power as a Cardinal and, arguably, was the Best At his position when it came to overall play. But his tenure as the Best At was so short that it puts him in the conversation for the Hall, but probably only on the cusp of getting into the Hall.

If Jim signs with the Cubs it will just prove what a business baseball has really become. He knows how Cards fans feel about the Cubs. The only reason to sign with them is if they were the one and only team to show interest in him. He must really want to keep playing because he will collect his salary whether he is playing or not. Say it ain’t so Jimmy!

— RichieRich

Jimmy thinks he can still play…the Cubs showing the most interest and playing well…might be the best decision for him. Jimmy is well aware of the rivalry…he’s not thinking about the remaining fan base in STL, he’s thinking about the chance to play SOMEWHERE. I can’t blame him but it’s gonna be very difficult to see his name on the back of a northside jersey! Couldn’t he be valuable as a coach somewhere in the Cardinals organization?!? That will never happen if this deal goes through.

Are the Cubs that desperate already????? Its not even June and they are going after washed up players. Edmunds hasn’t been any good for the last few seasons- why think he is magically gonna help them!!!!!! The only thing he has going for him is hitting in the “friendly” confines of Wrigley. If he can’t hit there, then he is truly washed up.
