New Civil War book with St. Louis connections
St. Louis’ Civil War Round Table is expecting a big turnout for its meeting Wednesday, which features the author of an upcoming book called “Troubled State.”
The book is the private Civil War journals of Franklin Archibald Dick, a St. Louis attorney and brother-in-law of Union Major General Frank Blair, Jr., who wanted to keep Missouri pro-Union.
Apparently Franklin Dick’s perspective of important historical events include something on the the early Camp Jackson incident when he was Captain Nathaniel Lyon’s assistant adjutant general.
After the war, Franklin Dick practiced law with Montgomery Blair, President Lincoln’s postmaster general.
Truman State University is publishing the book, but the finished book isn’t out yet - supposedly someone from the press is driving it to St. Louis so it is at the roundtable meeting.
Author Gari Carter will speak after dinner at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Two Hearts Banquet Center, 4532 South Lindbergh, St. Louis (314 843- 8858). If you want to hear about the book, e-mail reservations@civilwarstlouis.org. It’s probably too late to make dinner reservations. See more about the book at www.garicarter.com
