Summer books for boys
Post-Dispatch Book Editor
Has anyone ever run a book club for boys or know of some great guy titles? I’m thinking of trying to wrangle 5 or 6 boys - age 12 or 13 - to discuss a few books this sumer.
One of the books I’m considering is the middle school version of “In the Heart of the Sea,” about the whaling ship that was attacked by a sperm whale. (”The Revenge of the Whale” is the young people’s title.)
Some of the survivors were stuck on small boats in the middle of the sea and resorted to cannibalism. Sounds like a good one for 7th grade boys.

By Ray Bradbury: The Martian Chronicles & The Illustrated Man.
Also:The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk and Lord Of the Flies by william Golding.
And, of course, Animal Farm by George Orwell.
And, since it’s not a movie yet, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.
A brand new web site 0n reading for teenage boys may be useful
