Golf books are a stereotypical gift for Father’s Day. But if Dad doesn’t golf - or already has a bookcase full of pretty links pictures - there are plenty of other possibilities.

I asked St. Louis booksellers what they were suggesting for the dad who likes to read.

Here are their suggestions. I didn’t ask for descriptions, but Kris Kleindienst included great ones!

Kris Kleindienst of Left Bank Books

Top pick: “Home Game” by Michael Lewis. A kind of “Operating Instructions” (Anne Lamott) for men, a politically incorrect memoir of what it really feels like to be a new father.

For the clueless guy: “Stuff Every Man Should Know” by Brett Cohen. A breast pocket guide that tells you, among other things, how to cast a fishing rod, how to make the perfect martini, how to negotiate a raise, how to give a great massage, how to bet on horses, you get the picture. Kind of “A Dangerous Book for Men.”

For the sportsminded, “The St. Louis Baseball Reader,” Edited by Richard Peterson. It’s all here in this 400 page collection.

For the historian: “Never Been a Time” by Harper Barnes. History of the 1917 East St. Louis race riot and its effect on the Civil Rights movement.

For the sensitive artist: McSweeney’s 31. Every issue of McSweeney’s literary journal is a collectable work of art. This one is 8 1/2 X 11 with gold stamping and is dedicated to “Old Forms,” meaning lost literary forms.

Elmore Leonard’s new one, “Road Dogs”

“Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure” by Matthew Algeo

“The Scarecrow” by Michael Connelly

“Serious Barbecue” by Adam Perry Lang

(It’s not out yet, but I’m going to be pushing Ron Currie Jr. “Everything Matters!” like crazy. … Honestly, it’s the best book of the year…)

Vicki Erwin of Main Street Books

“American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House” by Jon Meacham

“Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure” by Matthew Algeo

“The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet” by Reif Larsen

Kelly von Plonski of Subterranean Books

“Coop” by Michael Perry

”How to Talk to Dads” by Alec Greven

“Home Game” by Michael Lewis
