Andy Williams says Obama slam taken ‘out of context’

Singer Andy Williams tried to smooth ruffled feathers in an interview on  “Good Morning America” to promote his memoir “Moon River and Me,” which went on sale today (Oct. 13).

A couple of weeks ago the Branson theater owner was quoted in the British press as saying that President Barack Obama wanted the country to “fail” and was pursuing “Marxist” theories.

The Norwegians on the Nobel Peace Prize committee see things differently, of course.

So today, “Good Morning America’s” Chris Cuomo asks Williams whether his comments on Obama were taken “out of context”:

Williams went for it. A lot was “taken out of context,” he said. Besides, ”it was an interview that I made to a reporter by phone in London and it just got blown out of proportion.

“I think Obama’s the most charismatic politician that we’ve seen since John F. Kennedy.”

He also said, “I have nothing absolutely against a liberal Democrat … I just think sometimes, like a lot of Americans, that he might be guiding us in the wrong direction.”

Then he came up with, perhaps, his best response: ”But that’s just from a singer. It really doesn’t mean much.”

Williams’ career, on the other hand, was important to many Americans and his memoir is quite readable, says Post-Dispatch reviewer Harry Levins. See the review in print and online this weekend.

In the meantime, do you think Williams, 81, meant what he said about Obama? Or was it the “media’s” fault for reporting it? He didn’t exactly apologize, but will you let bygones be bygones and go hear him talk about his book?

I think Andy is wrong. If he’s just a singer and it really doesn’t mean much, then what are the rest of us? Voters that don’t mean much. Bullhockola. And, his best response - OH PLEASE - Jane, you’re just a journalist - what your slanted stories tell don’t mean much either. You are just an “arm of the Democratic party”.

I agree with Andy Williams’ response: “But that’s just from a singer. It really doesn’t mean much.” Exactly correct. I have always enjoyed Andy’s voice and will continue to do so in spite of his political views or that of any other entertainer. Their job is to entertain. Their political views mean absolutely nothing to me.

I thought entertainers were supposed to “shut up and sing”? Or was that only when they dared to speak out against President Bush?

I hope to make it to Andy Williams’ book signing.

Is Mr. Williams not entitled to his opinion?…or should we simply smear him as a ‘racist, hatemonger?’

No one called him a racist or hatemonger, John C.

Andy Williams had it right the first time if in deed he said that Obama wants the country to fail and that he is following Marxist principles. He has not done anything that would make one believe that he is a patriot. He seems to support his color of race more than anything else and if someone disagrees with him, the standard line is that the owner of the comments is a racist. Oh well, we are stuck with him for now, let’s pray the country can survive his term of office.

It is obvious that Andy Williams speaks the thoughts of millions of Americans who would rather not see their country go down the path of a government dominated socialist agenda. The fact that he is a singer only makes his message stronger: Remember that music is the voice of the inner soul.

Could someone explain to me what aspect of Obama’s policiies or philosophy is “Marxist”? Marxism is characterized by a struggle between the economically advantaged and disadvantaged resulting in the overthrow of the advantaged and the creation of a working class that rules society. Marxism is an economic system, not a political one. Does anyone believe that his agenda is to have the disadvantaged in American society overthrow the people who are more economically advantaged? What specifically has Obama said or done that would demonstrate that he is following a Marxist doctrine?
