What do teens like to read?

In an online vote, John Green’s “Paper Towns” edged out the popular ”Twilight” and “Catching Fire” series.

This week is Teen Read Week for the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). Teens cast more than 11,000 votes online between Aug. 24 and Sept. 18 in the annual vote of favorites.

Here are the 2009 Teens’ Top Ten

1. Paper Towns by John Green (Penguin/Dutton)

2. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Scholastic)

4. City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare (Simon & Schuster/Margaret K. McElderry)

5. Identical by Ellen Hopkins (Simon & Schuster/Margaret K. McElderry)

6. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (HarperCollins)

7. Wake by Lisa McMann (Simon & Schuster/Simon Pulse)

8. Untamed by P.C. and Kristin Cast (St. Martin’s Griffin)

9. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart (Disney-
Hyperion)

10. Graceling by Kristin Cashore (Harcourt/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

And from ALA:

The Teens’ Top Ten is a booklist created entirely by and for teens as part of
YALSA’s Young Adult (YA) Galley Project, which facilitates access to advance
copies of young adult books to national teen book discussion groups. These
groups evaluated books published between January 2008 through April 2009
and then created a list of 25 nominations. Teen voters across the country
then cast ballots for their three favorites, creating the 2009 Teens’ Top Ten.

Final nominations for the 2010 Teens’ Top Ten vote will be posted on Support
Teen Literature Day, April 15, 2010,  at www.ala.org/teenstopten.

Looking for a great gift idea or stocking stuffers for family, co-workers and friends, the new fantasy novel, “Gateway to DreamWorld,” was released last month and has been receiving rave reviews.

During the cold months ahead, they will curl up in a warm blanket or in front of the fireplace and enter a fantasy world filled with excitement and suspense.

The book is listed on Amazon.com, Barnes&Nobles.com, and Powell’s Books.com

I wasn’t surprised to see “Breaking Dawn” on the list and can also see why “Wake” was also on the list- fabulous books. Although I haven’t read the other books I plan on checking them out. There is another book that I am certain would be on this list had it not just barely came out. The book is titled, “Sea Clearwater” by Selene Cardenas. My two teenagers just recently read it and were mystified by it. I decided to read it after they finished and I too absolutely loved it!
