Ellisville Straubs to close Oct. 31
One of the newest grocery stores in the St. Louis area is soon to shut its doors.
Straub’s Markets said Tuesday it plans to close its Ellisville store at the end of October. The 40,000 square foot store just opened in December.
In a statement, vice president Trip Straub said the store - which opened in the teeth of last fall’s economic downturn - never reached the sales levels it needed to be sustainable.
“We were very excited to open this one-of-a-kind store here in Ellisville,” Straub said. “Unfortunately, the timing didn’t cooperate as the economy bottomed out and competition in the area grew.”
Straub said the store, which included a cafe, bar and lounge, wine cellar and cooking school, allowed the company to “provide innovative and creative products and services to our customers.” Straubs will take what it learned there and incorporate it in the company’s other four stores.
Many of the store’s staffers will be re-assigned, but the closing will cost about 50 jobs company-wide, Straub said.

Why did I get a “Breaking News” email about this?!? Should I drop what I’m doing to be concerned about a grocery store in Ellisville closing?? Is there a candlelight vigil, a fund I can donate to…do I need to go into a panic room?
That’s a shame. Although I have to say I just went there for the first time a few weeks ago, and I only live five minutes away. I enjoyed the cafe, but as nice as the layout was, it’s just too expensive for my tastes.
Maybe its just me, but I have never considered shopping ‘an event.’ If I want to have a few beers, I’m not going to the grocery store to do it. If I”m going to lounge, its at home or a cetain type of bar. If I want a haircut, I don’t go to my gym. Everyone wants to be everything to all people. Its not possible and I doubt if most people want it that way. Its called biting off more than you can chew. Again, I could be wrong but shopping is not an event…especially these days.
This is sad…this store was awesome! Hate to see people losing their jobs.
Straub’s rocks! Guess will just have to go to Mason now.
I guess not enough people wanted to pay $5 for an organic apple.
Pearls before swine
I am shocked, I love shopping this location, they offer brands and a warm environment you don’t find in the stores today. When I shop Straub’s I sometimes feel as if I am in my own kitchen. At least we still have the Clayton Rd store but it is still ashame. I am sure it’s the economy keeping other local residence from experiencing the same things I do with shopping at Starubs. Best of luck to all their employees who may have to find new jobs.
Hmm. Makes you wonder about the wisdom of the new Schnucks behemoth in Des Peres. It seems like a beige Elephant in a time characterized by reduction of waste, trimming needless extravagance, and a greener approach. A relic of false prosperity. And Dierbergs wants to build an even greater homage to excess with a monster store about a block away. But as always, plenty of free parking and room for your Explorer.
People don’t realize the population out there is aging, and are very set in their ways. I couldn’t even get my father to change pattern, until he discovered their meat & peach pie.. The place cost a fortune, and the whole development at Clarkson/Clayton is failing, I’m afraid. West County is over-developed on the whole, and it will be painful to see more businesses out there fail. Anyone been in Chesterfield Mall lately? 1/2 the stores are gone, the place looks like a ghost town. It’ll be the next to follow Crestwood.
I agree. I’ll miss this store. It had so much to offer. I feel awful for anyone losing a job in this economy.
