The ribbon cutting is set for 11 a.m. tomorrow for the new Walgreens store on Lafayette Avenue south of downtown St. Louis.

City officials, representatives of Walgreens and people from Koman Properties, the developer, are to be on hand. The downtown area has been without a Walgreens since the store at St. Louis Centre closed along with the rest of the mall three years ago.

The $4.5 million store at 1530 Lafayette is at the eastern edge of Lafayette Square, across the street from the old City Hospital, which has been converted to The Georgian, a condo development. Koman has developed two other Walgreens in the city.

Hey Goodson, how about the grocery store? Another failed development…

Actually, Schnucks put the grocery store in the heart of downtown instead. It’s called Culinaria, look it up.

Andrew, confused? I am not referring to Culinaria. I am referring to a new urban grocery store that was in the plans for the site, to be a new concept of SuperValu. Gilded Age received a TIF for the project. Look it up!

Interesting comment, Kassa. I had forgotten about that until you mentioned it. There should be a follow-up on this asking about that (actually, it should’ve been in this story). And where are those 2 other Walgreens stores in the city? (not vital info., but what the hey. You have no space constraints online). I think this is just a PR brief, but I hope there will be a real story to follow.

And downtown is still without a Walgreens (and alas, without a locally owned pharmacy..sigh. I know they were expensive on many things, but I liked the Medicine Shoppe at Locust and Tucker). I can’t walk to this store. At least there is a pharmacy in Culinaria.

I think they should focus on cleaning up those broken down buildings in the back first. I am sure the units are very nice, but have you seen the broken down buildings in back. I am very surprised Butlers opened up next to the broken down buildings on one side, and Clinton Peabody on the other

So much for a feel good story, right? It is amazing how some people can make good news into bad. In this economy it’s a surprise that any $4+ million project gets done. Good luck to them and I hope the project is a huge success, I’m glad to have a Walgreens close to us.

You’d be much safer shopping at the Walgreens in St. Peters. Oh wait…
