Six months ago, the Ford apartment building rehab project “cratered” but work has resumed on the $11.5 development downtown, the owner said this afternoon.

Peter D. George said he hopes to have the building ready for tenants by the end of the year. His Blue Shutters Development is putting 36 two-bedroom apartments in the long-vacant building at 14th and Pine streets. Plans for the 14-story building include second-floor offices and first-floor retail space. Financing includes new market tax credits and tax-increment financing from the city.

“It’s a live project,” George said. “We’re funded.”

Plywood has been removed from many of the boarded-up windows to give workers enough light to see what they’re doing.

Blue Shutters got control of the building early this year after previous owner Matthew Burghoff ran afoul of the feds last year and work on the project halted. In December, Burghoff was sentenced to two years in federal prison for bank fraud and violating the Clean Air Act by improperly handling asbestos in the building. He had planned luxury condos for the Ford.

George said he hopes to have on the building next week banners proclaiming the development’s new name: The PD George Downtown.

“We’re trying to get (the building) looking a little bit better for the (baseball) All-Star Game,” he said.

Alternative energy is not “dicey”, it just takes a bit of planning and knowledge. Something some of the commenters are incapable of.
