City Garden’s Ninth Street to remain closed for now
The block of Ninth Street that bisects the new Citygarden downtown is freshly paved and striped but white plastic barricades are keeping the roadway traffic free.
Turns out the new sculpture garden’s popularity is so great that the people in charge of the project are worried that opening Ninth Street to traffic now would be a hazard to the throngs of park visitors. At least that’s the word today from Tricia Roland-Hamilton, director of the Gateway Mall project, of which City Garden is a part.
When the number of City Garden visitors eases off a bit, the barricades will come down and, once again, Ninth Street will be open to traffic. Roland-Hamilton says she suspects that won’t happen until the end of summer.

That’s FANTASTIC! A victory for the new City Garden, a victory for the residents and visitors to downtown! A human-scale, well-conceived, well-executed project is a win for everyone. Next up: I-70 and the connection to the Arch grounds. Let’s keep this ball rolling!!!!!
I agree. During All-Star week, the entire gateway mall should be closed down to traffic and become a pedestrian plaza, the way it was initially intended.
Alex, to your I-70 comment, city leaders need to take trip to Cincinnati to get ideas on how to make a connection from downtown to the Arch grounds. They have a very similar highway that runs right by their ball park and river front. It is beautiful landscaped with sound barriers. It does a great job of separating pedestrians from the sights and sounds of a busy noisey highway.
supersleuth- Great idea! Let’s just completely close down the downtown area and let all the people that work there stay home! Some people use those roads to get to and from work. All-Star week is going to be a traffic nightmare for those of us working downtown.
Alison E: if only there was some sort of train that you could take downtown…
Let’s close down all the roads in downtown. We can close down all the through streets and instead turn them into cull-de-sacs to keep traffic from driving through.
Also, we could we build lots of chain restauraunts and a sea of cheap vinyl sided houses that all look identical to each other. And we can rename downtown to St. Charles II.
Come on, this is the All-Star Game we’re talking about, not a visit from the Pope…wait, that didn’t cause gridlock either.
Seriously, I don’t think it will be too tough to get out of downtown after work next week, and keeping 9th Street closed won’t have much of an effect.
