Citygarden an immediate hit with visitors
Citygarden, the new sculpture park in downtown St. Louis, was a big attraction during its “soft opening” yesterday.
Adults wandered about until after dusk as kids dashed through illuminated jets of water spouting from a small plaza. Citygarden occupies two blocks bounded by Eighth and 10th streets and Market and Chestnut streets. It’s free and open daily. Like other city parks, Citygarden’s hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Gateway Foundation is paying for Citygarden’s $25 million to $30 million construction cost. The foundation also purchased and owns all the works of art, estimated to cost at least $12 million. The city owns the land and is responsible for the cost of the park’s water and electricity.
Key to Citygarden’s continued attractiveness will be maintenance. So far, the grass is neatly trimmed and the planting beds are immaculate. But one of the 102 water jets making up the plaza fountain was on the fritz last night.

I wish the city would focus resources on real issues like crime instead of building statues with their heads cut off.
Actually, a sculptor “built” it.
It really nice, but I wish that The Gateway Foundation could ave given the millions of dollars to the city for the St. Louis Public School system, the homeless,or crime prevention.
Its great to see it finally open. The city needs more projects like these to revitalize the core! Now we just need Metro and schools to be amped up downtown and companies might want to come to St. Louis, instead of leave!
Beautiful, can’t wait to take my family. While I’m in the vicinity I’ll also take them to lunch and spend some money downtown.
Your’e right coco, we should build nothing downtown. Buildings cost money and that should all go directly to the homeless.
I love these comments sections, every positive has its naysayers and I get to read their thoughts every day…
So how long before every piece is tagged with illegible paint jobs?
Well someguy, if anything is tagged, I would assume it would be addressed pretty quickly. The garden will have its own security and maintenance, so hopefully that won’t be an issue.
We have an awful lot of miserable people in this city.
Glad to see this project was a success. Stop pouring our city tax dollars into the pockets of all these corrupt black northside politicians and maybe downtown will get somewhere… And as far as “crime” goes… i live in the tower grove area and have never had an issue, crime in the southern half of stl is myth… get your head out of the sand…
I am sure this will develope St. Louis into a destination point for many visitors. Now we have the City Garden, The Arch, The Cardinals and a zoo
AMAZING!!! Beautiful project and one of the best things to happen in this part of downtown in years! It’s totally “hands-on” instead of “don’t touch” art–which is FABULOUS! There were lots of people and children of all ages enjoying it today! The timing couldn’t be better with the July 4th activities and All-Star game coming. BRAVO to all who inspired, supported and created this wonderful venue in our great city!!
And to the naysayers: This will bring people into downtown, generating tax revenues to support the homeless and other great needs in our city. You can’t build support for the needs without spending some $. It’s the old feed the family for a day or teach them to fish argument.
“But one of the 102 water jets making up the plaza fountain was on the fritz last night.”
That’s a better percentage than my yard.
