AirTran selects…Bud Select
Jeremiah McWilliams
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

In case the coffee and Coca-Cola weren’t enough for adult fliers, AirTran Airways today announced that it will serve Budweiser Select on all its flights.  Budweiser Select joins other brews from St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch — including Budweiser, Bud Light and Michelob Ultra — already available on AirTran’s flights. (The airline has about a half-dozen flights per day at Lambert Field).

“Our passengers have expressed a clear preference for Budweiser Select,” said Tad Hutcheson, AirTran Airways’ vice president for marketing and sales, in a statement.

AirTran Airways and Anheuser-Busch have a close relationship. When AirTran launched service from St. Louis on May 8th last year, the airline celebrated by boarding Budweiser and Bud Light beer born on the same date. AirTran said that was a first for any airline.

“We are pleased that AirTran Airways’ savvy consumers will have a chance to step up” to Bud Select,  said Dan Shannon, brand director for the beer.

Anheuser-Busch is in the midst of retooling its marketing for Bud Select, which was launched several years ago but has struggled to grow after a promising start. A-B touts the beer’s “combination of full-bodied flavor and light beer statistics,” and sees it as an upmarket alternative to Budweiser.

Anheuser-Busch is pulling back Bud Select’s national advertising to focus on about a dozen cities.
