Tax preparation fees average $148 in Missouri, $188 in Illinois
How much do you pay someone to do your taxes? A new survey by the National Society of Accountants says the average in Missouri is $148. In Illinois, it’s $188.
The national average is $205. The average assumes that clients are getting a Form 1040, itemized deductions and a state return. It also covers those who provide their preparer with well-organized records and who lack complications, such as operating a business. The cost goes up if you bring in a shoebox of jumbled receipts.
Costs vary among states based on costs of living, variations in supply and demand for tax services and other factors, said Andrew T. Morehead, president of the accountants’ group. The increasing complexity of taxes and last year’s last-minute changes to the tax law are driving more people to hire someone to do their taxes.
