Missouri, Illinois taxpayers could claim $73 million
The Internal Revenue Services says Missouri and Illinois taxpayers who failed to file tax returns for 2004 could claim nearly $73 million if they file by April 15.
The unclaimed returns average $608 in Illinois and $527 in Missouri.
Nationwide, more than $1.2 billion in refunds could be available to 1.3 million people who failed to file returns for 2004. In Missouri, more than $19.6 million is available to 24,900 taxpayers. In Illinois, the amount is $53.1 million for more than 50,000 taxpayers.
The IRS estimates the amount of refunds based on taxes withheld from people who didn’t file returns, those who might be eligible for the earned income tax credit and those who had earningsĀ but had too little income to require filing a return.
Refunds for 2004 could be reduced if people failed to file returns for 2005 or 2006. Refunds also may be applied to amounts owed to the IRS or could be used to satisfy unpaid child support or past due federal debts such as student loans.
The agency also wants to remind taxpayers that they will be eligible for an economic stimulus payment if they file returns for 2007 by April 15. Tax forms for this year and prior years are available at www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-829-3676.
