The average Missourian earned $34,389 last year, according to figures out today from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, that’s a 4.9 percent jump over 2006.

In Illinois, the per capita income was $40,322, up 5 percent from the prior year.

Both states grew slower than the national average of 5.2 percent and fell in the rankings of the 50 states. Missouri, leapfrogged by Louisiana and North Dakota, dropped two spots, from 30th in 2006 to 32nd last year.

Illinois also dropped two spots, from 14th to 16th, overtaken by Washington State and Alaska.

Once again, the top states were clustered in the Northeast: Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York and Maryland were the top five. Louisiana, New York and Mississippi grew the fastest.
