Commerce Bank says a new bank being built in O’Fallon, Mo., will be St. Charles County’s first “green” banking center.

The new bank, at the corner of Main and Elm streets, will have higher efficiency lighting, heating and air-handling systems, recycled or renewable building materials and clerestory windows that allow more daylight in the building. The bank is seeking certification of its green building status from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Commerce plans to break ground for the center at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A new green building is great for Commerce to do. However, I hope Commerce will look at their policy on serving customers after lobby hours. Why can’t the drive up windows also allow walk-ups? Right now, you must be in a car to use the drive up windows, either to use the ATM or to transact business with a teller. When I tried to walk up to one of these drive up stations, I was told that I had to be in a car to use the station.

Commerce needs to encourage people to get out of their cars and save energy. Just changing a policy would help.
