More than 30,000 potential recipients of government benefits in the St. Louis area have not yet claimed this year’s special stimulus payment, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
Claims can be filed before Oct. 15 by those who have any combination of earned income, nontaxable combat pay and certain payments from Social Security, Veterans Affairs or railroad retirement. Supplemental Security income doesn’t qualify.
Payments can be up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples. People with at least $3,000 in qualifying income can get a minimum payment of $300 ($600 for a couple) plus $300 for each qualifying child.
Throughout Missouri, 82,904 eligible people had not applied as of Sept. 12. In Illinois, 153,135 potential recipients had not applied.
People who filed a tax return should have received payments if there were eligible. Those who aren’t required to file a tax return may file Form 1040A with basic information, including name, address, dependents, amount of qualifying income, direct deposit information and signatures.
