Could your business use only cell phones?

Tim Barker writes an interesting story today about consumers dropping landline phones in their homes and going with cell phones only:

For nearly a decade, the venerable wired telephone has been making a slow but steady retreat from the American home.

With the nation’s economy now in tatters, that exodus appears to be picking up steam as cell phone users grow weary of paying for something many see as redundant.

After the home, is business the next frontier? Tell us whether your business could survive using only cell phones. Maybe it’s happened already. Would it save you money, and what would your customers think?

Would love to drop the land line, but what do you do about faxes and the internet? For a business I think land lines are here to stay.

How would an office with multiple extensions operate with cell phones? How could you easily transfer calls from one person to another? Wouldn’t cell phones be exponentially more expensive? Why would a business even have cell phones if employees do not need to work outside the office? It may work for a very limited number of businesses, but I don’t think cell phones without a land line would be practical for most.

Not to mention that horrible audio quality of cell phones. Plus, the tendency to scream into the phones is your party can’t hear you. That would not make for a good professional impression.

Ive been using my Wireless for everything, With the new Broadband cards for Laptops and Internal Faxes etc. The Technology is there to do it, now if you have an office infrastructure of FIXED users the Landline may be the way to go, But for small offices, Mobile Offices I have no problem using the Broadband cards and the Cell Phone as a modem and we are connected very well. We use Webcams and Conferencing Software and devices to conduct business from Airports, Hotel Rooms, Parking Lots or Jobsites.

For the Internet user the Broadband cards give great connectivity and fast speeds no matter where you are, Ive dumped my Landline, The Computer and WIFI etc have replaced finding and borrowing phones anywhere.

The answer to future office cell phone use may be the new in-house hub technology curremtrly being developed. They are called femtocells. For more info contact GSM.org or chris.bylander@corient.com
