General Motors Corp. plans to cut 38 Missouri dealerships and 66 Illinois ones from its ranks, according to a list released today by a U.S. House subcommittee. It did not identify the names of individual dealerships.
The list gives the number of dealers, by state, that the bankrupt automaker wants to shed through a wind-down process. GM is not terminating agreements with more than 1,300 dealerships immediately, but it will not renew the contracts once they expire by late next year.
Since GM notified the affected dealers on May 15, it has been mum on who received wind-down letters. GM said it let the dealers decide to reveal whether they have been affected. It’s still unclear how many St. Louis-area dealers in Missouri and Illinois will not have their franchise contracts renewed.
Spokeswoman Susan Garontakos said there are 154 GM dealers in Missouri and 311 in Illinois, including those that will wind down operations.
Pennsylvania has the highest number of affected dealers — 90. Meanwhile, no dealers in Alaska are on the wind-down list, according to the document posted on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce website.
The complete list is available in a PDF form entitled “GM Dealer Network Analysis.”
