Stifel Financial Corp., parent of the Stifel Nicolaus brokerage, announced Wednesday that it plans to offer 1.2 million shares of common stock through a public offering.

After the offering, St. Louis-based Stifel will have 29.75 million common shares outstanding, the company said.

No date or further details about the planned offering were available. At 1:13 p.m., Stifel shares were trading at around $56.44, or down 68 cents from Tuesday’s close.

The offering’s underwriters also will have the right to purchase an additional 180,000 shares at the offer price within the next 30 days.

This will be Stifel’s third public stock offering in the past 12 months. The most recent offering, held in June, totaled one million shares.
