Did you get the day off?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Several area companies were closed Friday due to the heavy snow. Did you get the day off? What did you do with your time? If you had to work, were you jealous of the schoolkids?

We were dismissed 2 hours early on Thursday, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out this morning that our office would be closed today. (We had worked out the contingency for letting staff know before the boss left yesterday, but I still wasn’t sure until I checked my voice mail this morning.)

Hubby had to work, but his office opened at 10 a.m. (instead of normal 8 a.m.)

I lazed around til mid-morning then ran some errands. I should be doing some housecleaning, but the lure of the computer was too much. :)

Yep, had to work…. FULL day.
Had to be here bright and early. I actually forgot about how cruddy the roads were on my way in until now, thinking about how icky they will be on my way home!

After trying to drive down an unplowed I-64 for 5 miles, I turned around and headed home. My job isn’t worth risking my life over and if my work doesn’t like it, they can KMA. Cars were flying out of control into the ditch, semis were driving too fast for conditions and there was no way I was going to attempt to finish the commute.

I work for myself. Cancelled an early morning appt. but I’m still working at the puter (taking a brief break.)

You know, it isn’t the snow… it is MoDot (or like the fellow said last week, LarryDot or CurlyDot).

8 inches of snow doesn’t stop Denver or Buffalo NY because their street crews know what SNOW is…and how to keep the roads reasonable clear, or get them that way once it stops falling.
My street still isn’t plowed, even though most driveways are clean courtesy of shoveling and the sun.

And those fools want MORE money to make more roads they can’t keep clean with a bitty bit of snow? Gwan! (Not a slam on the plowdrivers, or salt truckers, btw, but on the people who make the decisions, and who should spend a winter in Denver or Buffalo to learn how it is done. )

I called in at 6:45am before the plows hit my street! Took the day off and PLAYED! Played outside with the kids and the dogs and had a great time! I know it’s really early in the year to use a personal day, but it was well worth! Family first, job second.

One of my favorite St. Louis snow memories happened in 1956. Normandy High never closed for snow but one terrible morning did. But a lot of us didn’t know so we got to school anyway, sometimes very late, but we got there. So many people showed up we ended up working all morning with a teacher we wanted to work with and then at 11:30 the lunch ladies served Senate bean soup, hamburgers and fries. Out of a school of about a thousand at least 500 were at lunch. It was great.

I work at UMSL, which was closed today. So I stayed home. Ran an errand or two, but mostly just cleaned my apartment.
