TALK: Have you gone extreme?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Jeremiah McWilliams in Sunday’s paper writes about local breweries coming up with some extreme beers. Have you tried an extreme beer? If so, which is your favorite?

I am very into the micro-brews and such - been drinking them almost exclusively for a few years now. St. Louis is not the best market to find such beers, but Starr’s and Corral (in IL) offer a respectable selection. One of my current favorites (they are always changing) is Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout (now available at both places, as of my last visits). It is an Imperial Stout with 9.5% alcohol and is basically a stout, aged over a oak chips and injected with hops - mmmm!

Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA is another very good leap into the extreme beers, as it is a little heavier and more alcoholic (9%) than a regular IPA.

Both are excellent beers, and there are many, many more out there. But I would step lightly into the truly “extreme” beers, as I have tried to introduce friends too quickly to some of my best-liked beers, only to have them find the taste off-putting and scare them away from anything but the boring standards. It is best to take baby steps and build up to the more full flavored brews at your own speed.

I homebrewed for 10+ years and for anyone who ever has brewed their own, extreme beers are not new. They are becoming more commonplace though which serves to raise awareness. One comment to Billy, if you haven’t been to Luka’s Liquor in Ellisville you are missing out on the number one beer spot in entire region though there are beers not available in MO that I have to drive to Corral Liquor in Granite City to get.
There are so many great beers out there that fall into this catagory…Dogfish Head 90 Imperial IPA is one, Founders Devil Dancer is incredible (though nearly impossible to find and not available in MO at all), Goose Island XXX Imperial IPA is incredible as well. Those 3 are on the upper edge of extreme, but there are a whole host of great beers that some would consider extreme that are nearly maintstream for many of us…you just have to start small and work your way up to appreciate all that is available to us today!

Tried some Nameless Home Brew and it is remarkable good. You need someone who is darn near a nuclear chemist to make good home brew but it can be done and done well.

As a long time homebrewer I am thrilled that Schlafly and others are finally producing styles that I have tortured myself trying to make (lambic, dopplebock, etc.). I agree with greglpc to a degree that it requires a chemisty degree, but I do pretty well for just a B.S.E.E.

So when is AB finally going to call Budweiser the malt liquor it is? It ain’t no lager, that is for certain.
