Lt. Craig McGuire, of the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department, called this morning with the results of Saturday’s DWI checkpoint.

The checkpoint was at Highway 94 and Highway D from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. McGuire said 16 officers from the sheriff’s department, O’Fallon and St. Peters police departments and the Missouri Highway patrol worked the checkpoint. They were assisted by the the Eastern Missouri Police Academy, the St. Charles County Department of Corrections and the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

According to McGuire, officers:

  • Stopped 1,080 vehicles.
  • Arrested two drivers for suspected driving while intoxicated.
  • Issued seven traffic tickets for careless and imprudent driving and speeding.
  • Made one arrest for felony drug possession.

McGuire said 14 people were asked to perform field sobriety tests after officers smelled alcohol in their vehicles. The two drivers who failed field sobriety tests voluntarily submitted to blood tests, he said, so officers did not seek any warrants to draw blood.

Officers were heartened by one observation, McGuire said. “Many people chose to use a designated driver, which is very encouraging to us,” he said.

Trying to nab people coming back from the wineries? That explains the location and time of day.

haha “We were encouraged by people using designated drivers” that is joke…and you stopped 1000 vehicles and only just 2 DWI’s with 16 officers? that is really a complete and utterly ridiclous operation and waste of taxpayers money!
go out fight real crime like st louis city and county do…..they are the real police officers….not babysitting drivers who had a few glasses of wine!

AXEL FOLEY…Why so negative? This activity is covered by a federal grant that is supposed to be used for this purpose. Aside from that, two DWI’s, 7 tickets for careless and imprudent driving and speeding, and a felony arrest for drug possession, isn’t a bad 4 hours of work. And, it is good that because of these checkpoints people are thinking to use a designated driver. That should equate to fewer injuries and lives lost due to alcohol related accidents. I would call their efforts a success. What price do you put on a life?

axel_foley, these cops don’t really have much else to do in St. Charles Co. I’m not sure if you noticed or not, but crime is much more rampant in St. Louis Co. and St. Louis City…

They have saturated that area so long that everyone knows to just go the back way now. I know these stops do good but this is getting to be a ridiculous waste of taxpayer money. Not sure if some of you know it but Federal grants are from those of us that still work and pay those taxes. Nobama has baffled so many with his ”brilliant” speeches that you don’t even know where your money is coming from now. Those officers from all the other areas could have been on patrol in multiple locations getting more than 2 DUI offenders.

Axle Foley:

Do not get discouraged. You are 100% correct in your analysis. Statistically speaking, 4 of the 16 officers have alchol issues. 2 DWI’s that is a complete waste of money.

I wonder if 4-5 tanker trucks, 2 pump and ladders, 3 ambulances got there “call out” numbers for the check point.

This is funny. He religious right wing…this is your clue…chime in and tell us about all the kids they saved…

What a waste of time for a publicity/revenue stunt…”Stopped 1,080 vehicles” & “Arrested two drivers for suspected driving while intoxicated”….What a backwards hillbilly/redneck state Missourahhhh is. I hope out of state visitors avoid us like the plague.

They would have arrested more drunks if these officers were just on routine traffic patrol or running radar.
