Stimulus funds to add orientation center at Riverlands bird sanctuary
A new $3-million orientation center is part of a package of improvements at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in West Alton being funded by federal economic stimulus money.
Alan Dooley, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers, said the orientation facility will feature a two-story-high observation area with views of the Corps-run sanctuary and the Mississippi River. Work on the center will begin next spring, he said.
In all, the sanctuary is getting about $4.4 million in stimulus money, with the rest going to improve trails, rehab a parking lot, replace a picnic shelter and other items. Some work already is underway.

Tell me again how many jobs this money will create? This is NOT what we were told this money was for!
Been swindled — No, you have not been. This work is creating jobs for workers who are fabricating materials off site, performing design work and carrying out construction work on site. It is also creating lasting value for America in the form of enhancing an already superior recreation and outdoor experience that will provide enjoyment to visitors to one of the nation’s premier bird watching and wildlife areas. This is EXACTLY what the Stimulus act was supposed to do.
Alan - Just remember when your children come to you and ask why they have to pay 75% of their income to the government, make sure you tell them how we built this great orientation center. Tell them to go visit it and they will probably feel much better. Drink another glass of the Obama kool-aid. The debt is almost $100,000 per person. When is enough, enough?
I am happy to see any kind of money coming to the area. As far as 75% income for taxes for our children, that is a load of stuff and everyone knows it. Who ran up the national debt? It was GW BUSH, and if you are an honest person, and not a toally “Kool Aid Drinking BUSH Supporter”, you know it too. Wasn’t it BUSH and his buddies who said we were going to get Osama? When they had Osama traped in the mountains, what did Georgie do? He went into Iraq to finish what his daddy didn’t. By the way,how did that go? Not to well. So the GW fans now want to blame Obama for the failure of the repubilcan policies.
Now I will sit back and get BLASTED by the hard liners claiming I am a LIBERAL. Well, I hate to tell them, but I am not liberal, I am in favor of the DEATH penalty and a STRONG defense. I just don’t like the ultra right that is now the voice of a ONCE GREAT party.
