St. Charles American Legion post to award police and firefighters

Two law enforcement officers and a firefighter from St. Charles will receive awards for their service at at an upcoming ceremony hosted by a St. Charles chapter of the American Legion.

Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Drews, St. Charles Police Officer Ray Juengst and St. Charles Fire Capt. Keith Kampmann will be awarded at a dinner and ceremony starting at 5 p.m. Nov. 1. at Post 312, 2500 Raymond Drive in St. Charles.

The American Legion selected the three men from nominations submitted by their departments. The chapter has presented the yearly “Meritorious Service Award” since 1990.

Larry Du Four, chairman of the chapter’s law and order committee, gave the following descriptions of the nominees:

–Drews, 25, has been with the sheriff’s department for three years and is being recognized for making numerous traffic stops and arrests as well as his overall enthusiasm for the job.

–Juengst, 36, has served the St. Charles Police Department for 11 years and has received numerous awards for his success targeting drug dealers. He was also instrumental in making an arrest in the city’s only murder in 2008. Dana Fincher, 33, was shot to death by her ex-boyfriend, Ricky L. Prentice on July 26, 2008. He is serving a 30-year sentence for the murder.

–Kampmann, 51, has been with the St. Charles Fire Department for 25 years. His duties have included working as a firefighter, engineer, paramedic and battalion chief. He also has represented the department the “Firefighter’s Combat Challenge” national competition, which tests firefighters in rescue and fire-related events.

Each man will receive a plaque in recognition of their achievements, Du Four said.
