Rep. Roy Blunt takes his week-old bid for next year’s Republican U.S. Senate nomination to GOP vote-rich St. Charles County tonight, with an appearance at the county party’s Lincoln Day gathering.

The event, at the Columns Banquet and Conference Center in St. Charles, starts at 5:30 p.m. and the southwest Missouri Congressman will speak at 7 p.m.

Brandy Pedersen, the county GOP committee’s vice-chairman, said Rep. Todd Akin, R-Town and Country, also will speak.

It’s early, and there are several contenders for the 2010 Senate seat, but Roy Blunt clearly stands out as the most qualified. The media darling, I’m sure will be Robin Carnahan. I hope the voters can get past the politics and focus on qualifications. Blunt has been in Congress for 10 years, and before that, he was the state’s longest-tenured Secretary of State. He knows the issues that affect Missouri on a federal level better than any of the other candidates. I just hope the voters see through the Carnahan machine.
