St. Charles County Council endorses cut in Highway DD limit
The St. Charles County Council voted 6-0 on Monday night for a measure designed to renew pressure on state transportation officials to cut the speed limit on a stretch of accident-plagued Highway DD west of Highway 40.
The measure, if ratified by the Missouri Department of Transportation, would reduce the limit to 45 mph from 50 mph on DD between 40 and a spot 500 feet past Frontier Middle School.
Council Chairman Joe Brazil, the bill’s sponsor, earlier this month had worded the bill to cut the speed to 40 mph but on Monday asked that the measure be amended to 45.
He said he decided on the change after residents attending a public meeting in New Melle last week indicated they favored 45 via a show of hands.
The state in 2007 rejected a previous request by the council to reduce the speed to 45.
Brazil, a Republican from the Defiance area, said most speakers at the meeting last week were more concerned about the need to create shoulders on DD - which MoDOT plans to do beginning next year.

What about Hwy. D? It is worse than DD! Especially through Busch Wildlife area, where so many kids drive to get to the high school. That’s really a scary stretch of highway.
Only 5 mph?…what a joke! Make it 10!
Come on MomInDefiance, its not only the kids that go flying through there. I have been through there plenty of times and have seen the rush hour traffic ignoring the speed limit, and crossing into the oncoming lane while going around curves.
I don’t know If I said it already but …Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. But i think just reduce 5mph is not fair. I think it should be at least 10mph.
