Today’s Post-Dispatch had a story St. Louis County school districts hiking tax rates again. Want to know what’s happening on the other side of the river?

In St. Charles County, commercial properties had a loss in value of about 5 percent. School districts were not surprised - that was the figure estimated by the assessor’s office earlier this year.

All five major school districts in St. Charles County have estimated they will need to raise their ratesbased on the loss in residential and commercial property tax revenue.

For example, the St. Charles School District has not yet finalized its tax rate but estimates it will be about $4.57, up from $4.30 the previous year, Superintendent Randy Charles said Wednesday. Teachers will still get raises at an average of 3.1 percent.

The Francis Howell School District also has not finalized its tax rate. Teachers there will get an average raise of 2 percent.

Guaranteed pay raises (no matter the economy) = Guaranteed tax increases (no matter the accountability). Typical government employee monopoly. I can’t wait until all our medical personnel are unionized government employees. You think taxes are high now…just wait.
