Alina Fernandez, the daughter of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, will speak Wednesday at St. Charles Community College during Women’s History Month.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building on the college’s campus at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville.

Fernandez will speak about her life, and the history and future of Cuba. She will talk about her experiences as a child growing up in Cuba, and will reflect on the country’s politics. Fernandez now resides in the United States.

Fernandez’s story, “Castro’s Daughter: An Exile’s Memoir of Cuba,” was published in 1998 by St. Martin’s Press.

People should boycott SCCC. Why would they have her speak? What has this woman done for any woman that isn’t from Cuba? This is truly jumping the shark. What has St. Charles come to? Of course she resides in the United States. Everyone wants to come here. Why doesn’t she move back to Cuba and try and see if she can do anything but clean the dirt floors of her house. She for sure wouldn’t be speaking to other women. She can thank her father for all he has done for Cuba.

Eyeopener, you are just being ignorant there. Isn’t helping women from Cuba as laudable a goal as an American woman helping those in this country? And then saying that she should go back to clean her dirt floors? Come on. That is beyond insensitive. Even if your argument behind that moronic comment stands that she will be unable to do anything there doesn’t that make it all the more obvious that she should come here where she can spread her message about all the problems facing women in Cuba, where it will have more of an effect than in Cuba where she will be shut down immediately? You should be proud that a school like SCCC is giving her a forum to spread her message in a country that appreciates it, and where it may eventually affect policy in her own country.
