A suspected stove fire destroyed a St. Charles County apartment Monday afternoon but all tenants, including children, escaped unhurt, fire officials said.

The fire started shortly before 2 p.m. in the kitchen of a two-story apartment building in the 100 block of Park Charles Drive South, authorities said.

Asst. Chief Steve Brown of Central County Fire and Rescue said investigators believe a child started the stove fire, which took firefighters about an hour to put out.

The child and at least one other sibling got out safely.

Jessica Flesher, 18, said she just moved into one of the other apartments in the building with her older sister five days ago and just hauled all her furniture in yesterday. She said she does not have renter’s insurance and will likely stay with her grandparents in Florissant.

Flesher said she was at work when she got a call about the fire and came home to check on “Cash,” her 1-year-old Pug. Fleshing wrapped Cash in a beach towel and cradled him in her arms as firefighters worked on the fire. The dog was startled but not hurt.

“Everyone is OK. That’s all I was really worried about,” she said. “It kind of sucks that all my furniture, all my clothes–gone.”
