Sunday’s Post-Dispatch has a special report by staff reporters Jeremy Kohler and Joe Mahr about some of the major obstacles to cracking down on repeat drunken drivers.

Part of their report was a statistical analysis and ranking of the St. Louis area’s 68 largest police departments on DWI enforcement.

Cottleville, in St. Charles County, was the best, arresting more than 100 people for DWI out of about 1,500 traffic stops in 2008.

The largest police departments in St. Charles County all made the top half of those ranked. Here’s how the rest did:

The St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department - 13th
Lake Saint Louis - 17th
O’Fallon, Mo., - 18th
St. Peters - 24th
St. Charles - 29th
Wentzville - 33rd

The analysis was done using 2008 data. Read more about the analysis by clicking this sentence and scrolling down to the interactive graphic showing the rankings.

Sunday’s special report follows up a story from March on the subject. Click here to read that story.

One really shouldn’t be surprised. Cottleville PD really doesn’t have anything else to do but traffic enforcement. They should also be number one in speeding tickets.

No fair!

They have a White Castle right in front of a college surrounded by bars. My friends, in Missourah, this is what we call “huntin on a bait pile.”

Actually, Kudos to the Cottleville PD for keeping drunks off the streets. It’s simple really. I drink. I drive a car. I DO NOT drink and drive. Take a taxi, call a friend, don’t mess your life up by getting a DUI. It is more expensive than you can imagine. You will look back at the wisdom of not calling a cab and kick yourself forever.

Kudos to the Cottleville Police force for a job well done. Drinking and driving has claimed two close friends and my brother in law from his family. Please call a friend or taxi if you have been drinking and save yourself the aggrevation and useless destruction of lives.

I will feel safer in Cottleville knowing that they are removing potential killers off the road. Thank you Cottleville Police Department.
