O’Fallon’s Fort Zumwalt gets log donation
Joel Currier
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Fort Zumwalt’s logs have arrived. How excited are you?

O’Fallon has been researching and preparing to restore the historic Fort Zumwalt site for more than three years.

Sixty-three white oak tree trunks were donated to the city by Charlie Brunjes, a member of the O’Fallon Community Foundation, which has already paid at least $60,000 to conduct three archaeological digs at the site.

Fort Zumwalt was the 18th century split log cabin built by Jacob Zumwalt and later owned by the prominent Heald family. The home was originally called Zumwalt’s Fort, which got its name because it was a refuge for early settlers during American Indian uprisings sparked by the War of 1812. It was on land what is today known as Fort Zumwalt Park, downhill from the historic Heald home.

The city says Brunjes harvested the trees on his own property near Troy, Mo., and had them delivered last month.

The first phase of construction of the fort is scheduled for winter.
